Knights Clinch Playoff Berth Against St. Lawrence

With a win over St. Lawrence in the second game of a doubleheader, the Clarkson University Baseball team clinched a spot in the Liberty League playoffs for the second consecutive year.

Clarkson now has 21-7 overall record and a 14-6 conference record while St. Lawrence has a 16-19 record overall and is 7-14 in the Liberty League.

Clarkson looked like they would earn the playoff spot in the first game of the doubleheader. A bases loaded walk to junior Greg Jasek followed by single by freshman Will Coleman gave Clarkson a 3-0 lead in the third inning. That lead would hold until the bottom of the seventh when the Saints scored three runs to send the game to extra innings. Neither team would score for three straight innings. Finally, in the bottom of the 11th, St. Lawrence was able to push the game-winning run across the plate to take a 4-3 victory. Sophomore Ted Wilson started the game on the mound for Clarkson and pitched six and two third innings, allowing three runs on three hits. Will Coleman pitched one and one third innings without allowing a run. Fellow freshman Andrew Smith closed out the game, pitching two and one third innings and allowing only one run. Smith picked up the loss and has a 3-2 record this season.

The Green and Gold opened the second game by scoring in the first four innings. Jasek opened the scoring in the top of the first with a single that scored senior John Coleman. In the second, a triple by John Coleman scored junior Anthony Padrazo. Clarkson scored two runs in the third, with Will Coleman and sophomore Dom Pirro coming home on a single by senior Tim Beninati. Finally, in the fourth, Pirro doubled to score Jasek for the fifth Clarkson run. St. Lawrence would answer with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 5-4. However, the Saints could not find the game-tying run.

Junior Joe Rooney started the second game for Clarkson, pitching three and two third innings, allowing four runs on seven hits.  Senior Nolan Driscoll and Will Coleman combined to pitch a scoreless final three and one third innings, allowing only three hits in that span.

The two teams will play two more games on Sunday, with the action moving from Canton to Jack Phillips Stadium in Potsdam. The first game will start at 12:00 noon.
