Baseball Wins One of Two Against RPI

An 11 inning victory in the first game helped the Clarkson University Baseball team win one out of two games against Rensselaer on Sunday afternoon at Jack Phillips Stadium. RPI would win the second game by a score of 5-3.

Clarkson now has a 16-5 overall record this season and is 10-4 in the Liberty League while RPI is 16-12 overall and is 15-5 in conference games.

The two teams combined to score just eight total runs in two games on Saturday, but by the end of the first inning on Sunday, they had already pushed 12 runs across the plate. Clarkson opened the game by scoring five runs on six hits in the first inning. RPI would come right back and score seven runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead back. Clarkson would get a sixth run in the fourth inning when a single by freshman Will Coleman scored sophomore Paul Ludden, and the Golden Knights would tie the game one inning later on a solo home run by senior Nolan Driscoll. A sacrifice fly by sophomore Chris Miller scored senior Matt Jenack in the top of the seventh to give Clarkson a lead, but the Engineers scored a run in the bottom of the frame to send the game to extra innings. Clarkson was able to score two runs in the top of the eighth, but RPI again answered with two of their own. Finally, in the top of the 11th, Clarkson was able to score three runs, thanks to hits by Will Coleman, sophomore Dom Pirro, junior Anthony Padrazo, and a triple by senior John Coleman. Freshman Andrew Smith was able to close out the inning and pick up his second win of the year.

In the second game, Rensselaer jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings and never looked back. Clarkson got on the scoreboard in the fourth on a solo home run from Miller and added two more in the fifth inning, but that would be it as RPI pitcher Sean Conroy finished out a complete game.

In the first game, Will Coleman pitched one inning, giving up seven runs on eight hits. Junior Jamie Terry came in and pitched four shutout innings, giving up only three hits. Sophomore Ted Wilson went the next three innings, giving up three runs on five hits and then Smith closed the game out with three innings without an RPI hit. In the second game, junior Joe Rooney pitched all six innings, giving up five runs on six hits with three strikeouts.

Clarkson's next game will be on Wednesday when they host SUNY Canton for a 4:00 pm game.
