Game Recap: Men's Baseball | | April 18, 2015

Clarkson Splits First Doubleheader With RPI

For the third consecutive doubleheader, the Clarkson University Baseball team took one out of the two games. This time it was against Rensselaer and the Golden Knights dropped the first game by the score of 3-0, but came back to win the second game 4-1.

Clarkson now has a 15-4 overall record and is 9-3 in the Liberty League while RPI is 15-11 overall and 14-4 in conference games.

The first game was a pitcher's duel with junior Ian Castle for Clarkson and Jared Jenson for RPI pitching shutouts through the first six innings. The Engineers would finally break through with three runs in the top of the seventh on three hits. That would be all Jenson needed as he got three straight outs in the bottom of the inning to complete the shutout. Castle would finish with seven innings pitched, giving up three runs on eight hits and three strikeouts.

RPI would open the second game just like they had finished the first, with the Engineers picking up a run in the top of the first on one hit. Clarkson would get their first run of the day in the bottom of the frame. Sophomores Paul Ludden and Chris Miller hit consecutive singles and then an RPI error on a ball hit by freshman Will Coleman drove in Ludden to tie the game.

The Green and Gold would take their first lead two innings later. Consecutive singles by senior John Coleman and Ludden opened the inning and one out later a groundout by junior Greg Jasek scored Coleman. Will Coleman followed that up with a single of his own to score Ludden and give Clarkson a 3-1 lead. Clarkson would tack on one more in the fourth inning when consecutive RPI errors allowed junior Anthony Padrazo to score. That would be the last of the scoring as sophomore Dom Pirro and Will Coleman did not allow an RPI run in the final eight innings. Pirro pitched the first seven innings, scattering six hits while only allowing the single run and Coleman pitched the final two frames and did not give up a single hit.

The two teams will play two more games tomorrow starting at 12:00 noon.
