Clarkson Splits Sunday Doubleheader at Union

After sweeping both games of a doubleheader on Saturday, the Clarkson University Baseball team split two games on Sunday to take a 3-1 win in the season series against Union, winning the opener 4-1 before dropping the nightcap 8-1. It was the first time that Clarkson has won three out of four games against the Dutchmen since the 2011 season.

Clarkson's record now stands at 13-2 and the Golden Knights are 7-1 in Liberty League games while Union has an 11-8 overall record and is 7-5 in conference games.

In the opener, both teams were scoreless through the first five innings, but Clarkson broke the deadlock with four runs in tahe top of the fifth. Senior Matt Jenack led the inning off with a walk. After an out by sophomore Connor Dietrich, consecutive singles by senior John Coleman and sophomore Paul Ludden scored Jenack. Sophomore Chris Miller walked to load the bases and junior Greg Jasek doubled to clear the bases and give Clarkson a 4-0 lead. Union got one run back in the bottom of the frame, but that would be as close as they got and the Green and Gold took the first game of the doubleheader.

The second game belonged  to Union as they plated five runs in the bottom of the first inning and then scored one run in the next three innings to take a commanding 8-0 lead after four innings. Clarkson was able to load the bases in the top of the eighth inning, but they could only move one run across the plate and the game finished in an 8-1 Union victory.

Freshman Will Coleman pitched a complete game in the opener, allowing only one run on three hits in seven innings of work. It was the third win of the season for the rookie. The second game saw three different Clarkson players take the mound. Sophomore Jeremy Barber started the game and went five innings, giving up eight runs on four hits, with four strikeouts. Junior Jamie Terry went two innings and freshman Rory Corcoran pitched the last inning with the pair combining to give up zero runs.

Clarkson's next game will be on Wednesday when they host RIT for a doubleheader at Jack Phillips Stadium at Snell Field.
