Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Feb. 20, 2015

Knights Defeat Dartmouth 2-1 in Overtime

An overtime goal from sophomore Genevieve Bannon (Candiac, QUE) completed a late comeback as the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team won 2-1 at Dartmouth on Friday night.

The win pushes Clarkson to a record of 21-9-3 overall and 15-4-2 in ECAC Hockey. The win, coupled with a 1-1 tie between Harvard and St. Lawrence, means Clarkson still has a chance to repeat as ECAC Hockey regular season champions. They will face Harvard tomorrow with a Clarkson win giving the Golden Knights the regular season crown, while a tie or a Harvard win would mean the Crimson finish as champions.

"Tonight was a great win for us," said Clarkson Head Coach Matt Desrosiers. "It was a really good hockey game with both teams having some good chances and both goalies coming up with some big saves. I thought we did a good job simplifying our game and getting a lot of pucks to the net. It was really a great team effort from everyone. We continued to play hard throughout the entire game and kept telling the players that the goals were eventually going to come. Like I said, that was a big win for us because it puts us back in the hunt for the league championship. Tomorrow's game should be very exciting and entertaining."

For the first two and a half periods, it did not look like the Green and Gold would have a chance to win the title on Saturday. Clarkson held a 26-15 advantage in shots, but it would be Dartmouth who lead 1-0 after two periods, with a Kennedy Ottenbreit power-play goal puttting the Big Green ahead 13 minutes into the first period.

With just over five minutes left in the game, Clarkson was finally able to find the back of the net. It would be senior Christine Lambert (Thetford Mines, QUE) who got the tying goal with freshman Savannah Harmon (Downers Grove, IL) picking up an assist on the power-play goal.  Junior captain Shannon MacAulay (Mt. Herbert, PEI) also picked up an assist on the goal.

Both teams were unable to score in the final five minutes of regulation, and so they headed into a five-minute overtime period. In the first few minutes, the Big Green controlled the puck, including taking three shots. However, Clarkson freshman goaltender Shea Tiley (Owen Sound, ONT) made saves on all three shots to keep the game going and set the stage for Bannon's heroics. Bannon's game-winner would come 3:51 into the overtime, with sophomore Jessica Gillham (Uxbridge, ONT) getting the assist. It was the first overtime goal of Bannon's collegiate career.

Tiley would finish with 26 saves for the Golden Knights while her Dartmouth counterpart, Robyn Chemago finished with 40 stops. Clarkson held a 42-27 advantage in shots and scored on one out of their four power plays.

The Knights will close out the regular season tomorrow at 4:00 pm at Harvard.
