Knights Repeat as ECAC Hockey Regular Season Champions

A first-period goal by freshman Brielle Bellerive (N. Vancouver, BC) was the difference as the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team defeated Harvard 1-0 in the ECAC Hockey regular season finale.

Clarkson finishes the regular season with an overall record of 22-9-3 and a 16-4-2 record in ECAC Hockey play. They finish tied with Harvard for first place in the conference with 34 points apiece, but the Golden Knights will retain their ECAC Hockey regular season trophy by virtue of their 1-0-1 record against the Crimson this season.

"I am not sure if our coaching staff could be any more proud of the way the team rallied around each other this weekend," stated Head Coach Matt Desrosiers. "The effort and passion they showed was tremendous. I was really impressed with the amount of focus and determination the entire team played with this weekend.  They knew exactly what they needed to do in order to win the league championship and they worked extremely hard to achieve their goal."

Bellerive would score an unassisted goal 8:20 into the first period to give Clarkson a lead they would not relinquish.

The teams were evenly matched throughout the first two periods, with Clarkson outshooting Harvard 19-14 through two and carrying that slim 1-0 lead. In the third however, Harvard would push to tie the game up. They had 14 shots in the final period, including nine in the last 90 seconds of the game, after Harvard had pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker. Clarkson held strong though, with freshman goaltender Shea Tiley (Owen Sound, ONT) stopping four of those shots and Clarkson skaters blocking another four to ensure Bellerive's goal stood as the winner.

Tiley would finish with 28 saves to complete her eighth shutout of the season. Clarkson was unable to find a goal on any of its three power plays and killed off both of Harvard's man-advantage opportunities.

Top-seeded Clarkson will host eighth-seeded Dartmouth in the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals for the second straight year. The best two-out-of-three series will be played next weekend at Cheel Arena.
