Knights Open New Year Hosting Princeton and Quinnipiac

With the start of the New Year, the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team will look to get back on the winning track after closing out the 2010 portion of the schedule with just a 1-3-2 mark in its last six games. The Golden Knights, guided by third-year co-head coaches Matt and Shannon Desrosiers and assistant coach Matt Kelly own a 6-10-3 overall record and are tied for eighth-place in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 3-3-1 conference slate. The Green and Gold, who along with travel partner St. Lawrence, have played the fewest league games in the conference and are just three points out of fourth place and five points shy of second.

After a 33-day layoff, the Knights resume ECAC Hockey play when they host Princeton and Quinnipiac at Cheel Arena this weekend, facing off against the Tigers at 7:00 p.m. on Friday and battling the Bobcats on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

In its last action before the lengthy break, Clarkson suffered a double dip in central NY falling to Colgate 5-2 in Hamilton, and losing to national powerhouse Cornell 3-0 in Ithaca. In their last games in Potsdam, the Knights tied (1-1) and shut out (4-0) Vermont on November 27-28.

Senior Melissa Waldie (Newmarket, ONT) leads the Clarkson offense with 12 points on eight goals and four assists. Junior Juana Baribeau (Amos, QUE) follows closely behind with 10 points (4-6). Waldie, who has 109 career points (60-49), is two points away from becoming the Knights’ second all-time leading scorer. Baribeau is striving to join Waldie in Clarkson’s century club. Through 95 career games, she has tallied 80 points (40-40). Freshman Jamie Lee Rattray (Kanata, ONT) is Clarkson’s leading playmaker with eight assists and is third on the Knights’ point chart with nine.

Senior Lauren Dahm (Baldwinsville, NY) has started 12 games this season in the Clarkson crease and holds a .918 save percentage, a 2.56 goals against average and a 4-7-1 record, including one shutout. Dahm has set the school-record for career wins with a 49-32-12 record and has tied the Clarkson mark for career shutouts with 20 whitewashes. Freshman Erica Howe (Ottawa, ONT) has played in 10 games, including starts in five of the last seven games. She posts a .930 save percentage, a 1.69 GAA and a 2-3-2 record, including one shutout.

Riding a five-game winning streak, Princeton is on top of its game at the start of 2011 and currently rates as one of the top teams in ECAC Hockey.The Tigers, guided by head coach Jeff Kampersal, own an 8-10-1 overall record. Princeton, along with Quinnipiac, has played the most games in the conference and is in third place in the league standings with a 5-6-1 mark. After knocking off Top-10 ranked Boston College 3-0 in New Jersey on December 31 to close out 2010, the Tigers posted their third consecutive shutout with a 3-0 blanking of Quinnipiac at Hobey Baker Rink to open the New Year this past Monday.

Receiving votes in the latest national polls, Quinnipiac has been on the verge of cracking the Top 10 all season long. Guided by former Clarkson head coach Rick Seeley, the Bobcats stand at 13-7-1 prior to Friday’s game at St. Lawrence. Quinnipiac enters the weekend in second place in the league standings with a 6-6 ECAC Hockey mark. The Bobcats saw a four-game winning streak come to an end with Monday’s loss at Princeton. During its winning streak, Quinnipiac had outscored its opponents 18-3 during the four-game span.
