Dominant Third Period Lifts Knights to Fourth Straight Victory

Princeton, NJ - Twenty-two shots led to three goals in the third period as the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team exacted a measure of revenge against Princeton, coming from behind for a 3-2 victory against the Tigers in ECAC Hockey action Saturday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink.

The Golden Knights, winners of four straight games, improved to 11-13-3 overall and 8-6-1 in the league standings to climb into a fifth-place tie in ECAC Hockey. Princeton, which shares that fifth-place spot in the conference rankings, moved to 11-11-1 and 8-7-1. Clarkson returns to Cheel Arena next weekend to host Cornell and Colgate.

The Tigers picked up a goal early on in the first period and held off the Knights offense for the fourth and fifth straight periods, clinging to a 1-0 lead after 40 minutes. However, Clarkson peppered the Princeton goal with 22 shots in the final period. Such a bombardment was sure to produce goals for the Knights, and it didn't take long for Clarkson to tie up the score. Junior Juana Baribeau (Amos, QUE) scored her sixth goal of the year at 7:30 in the third period with assists going to freshman Carly Mercer (Exeter, ONT) and senior Melissa Waldie (Newmarket, ONT). Six minutes later, Mercer put the Knights ahead with her fifth tally of the year as Danielle Skirrow (Trenton, ONT) and Baribeau helped set up the goal. Less than four minutes later, Clarkson's recharged offense tacked on what would prove to be the eventual game-winner on the power play. Waldie scored her team-best 13th goal of the year while the Knights skated up one, as freshman Jamie-Lee Rattray (Kanata, ONT) earned her 13th assist of the campaign.

Princeton pulled to within one at 18:45 after having removed the goalie for an extra attacker, but the Tigers could not find the equalizer in the final 1:15.

Freshman Erica Howe (Ottawa, ONT) recorded 20 saves for her second victory of the weekend for Clarkson, while Rachel Weber made 41 saves for Princeton. The Knights doubled up the Tigers in shots, 44-22, playing an entirely different game from the first meeting between the two teams when Clarkson could only muster 18 shots in the contest. Both teams were 1-for-7 on the power play on Saturday afternoon.
