Potsdam, NY – For the second consecutive day, the Clarkson University Men’s Basketball team’s defense held its opponent to a low-field goal percentage and picked up another conference win with a 46-41 victory over Rensselaer Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 7-13 overall and 3-6 in the Liberty League while RPI dropped to 11-9 and 4-5. Clarkson allowed just 77 points on the weekend and the two point totals by Rensselaer and Vassar are the two lowest scoring outputs this season by any team in the Liberty League.

Though Rensselaer dominated the offensive glass, their rebounding prowess couldn’t help them on the scoreboard, as they shot just 7-for-31 from the floor and 1-for-7 from beyond the 3-point line. Clarkson needed to make the most of their opportunities as they shot 10-for-24 from the floor, but grabbed just five offensive rebounds in comparison to the Red Hawks 13. The Knights held a 21-15 advantage at the half with sophomore Jon Youngmann (Corinth, NY) scored eight points to lead the Knights in the half.

The second half was much of the same as neither team could muster much offensively. Rensselaer fell behind by 10 midway through the half, but went on several small runs to take a single-point advantage after a 3-point field goal made it 39-38 with 3:37 left. The Knights held the Red Hawks scoreless for the next 3:35 and finished Rensselaer off with solid free throw shooting.

Junior forward Russ Vitallo (Dracut, MA) scored a team-high nine points and grabbed six rebounds while Youngmann and Kevin Bolduc (Auburn, NH) each contributed eight points. John Van Schaick led all scorers with 11 points for the Red Hawks and Schneider added 10 points and six rebounds.
