KNIGHTS END FIVE-GAME SKID WITH 65-60 WIN OVER SLU

Potsdam, NY – Senior point guard Matt Decker (Whitney Point, NY) scored 18 points, grabbed six rebounds and added seven assists as the Clarkson University Men’s Basketball team ended a five-game losing streak with a 65-60 Liberty League conference victory over St. Lawrence Tuesday night at Alumni Gym.

Clarkson improved to 5-11 overall and 1-4 in conference play, while St. Lawrence dropped to 4-11 and 2-3. The Golden Knights ended a four-game losing streak against the Saints with the win.

The two teams traded baskets for the first nine minutes before Clarkson made three consecutive 3-point field goals to take a nine-point lead. Pat Delmonico responded by scoring eight of the Saints’ next 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers as St. Lawrence and the Saints were able to tie the game at 25-25 with five minutes remaining in the period. Clarkson picked up another 3-pointer from Brandon Rigg-Reives (Almont, NY) and the Knights moved back out to a 32-29 lead at the half. Aaron Marshall, the Saints and the Liberty League’s top scorer at 24.6 points per game, was held to just two points on 1-for-5 shooting in the opening 20 minutes.

Starting the second half, Clarkson went on an 11-0 run in the first five minutes to take a 40-29 lead. The Saints dropped the advantage to five points on several occasions before finally going on a 10-1 run to take the lead with just six and a half minutes left. Clarkson went back on a 7-0 run, with five points from Decker, to take a five-point lead four minutes remaining. A 3-pointer from Tyler Shaver with 1:43 left cut the lead to two at 59-57. A lay up from Erick Vigansky (Kenosha, WI) with 31 seconds left gave the Knights a four-point advantage, which Vigansky added to with a pair of free throws to help assure the victory for Clarkson.

Vigansky shot 5-for-6 from the floor, scoring 14 points for Clarkson. Russ Vitallo (Dracut, MA) also added seven points and 11 rebounds for the Knights.

Shaver scored a team-high 16 points for the Saints, shooting 5-for-6 from the floor, but just 3-for-7 from the free throw line. Pat Delmonico also added 14 points and Keith Sullivan scored 10. Marshall finished with only four points, but grabbed 11 boards.
