Knights Split on Friday to Two Cardinals

Potsdam, NY – On its home court for the first time this fall, the Clarkson University Volleyball team split, sweeping Plattsburgh State and then dropping a match to St. John Fisher in three Friday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights took care of things early with a three-set sweep of Plattsburgh State, winning 25-16, 25-13, 25-19. However, Clarkson struggled against the St. John Fisher Cardinals, fall in three 25-12, 25-13, 25-18. Clarkson will regroup with matches against Keuka College and Middlebury College on Saturday.

Clarkson controlled most of the first set, rolling out to an early 8-2 lead by capitalizing on three attack errors in a five-point stretch. Plattsburgh wouldn't let the set get away, though, climbing back to within four a couple of times, including as late as 15-11. Clarkson would maintain at least a four-point advantage for the remainder of the set, up by five late (21-16) before rattling off four straight points, including a kill and ace from Marin Hangliter and a set-ending kill by Conley Burns.

Although Plattsburgh had an early lead in set number-two, Clarkson quickly came back and went to work on offense. The two teams were tied at 8-8 and Plattsburgh took a timeout at 9-8, but it did little to slow Clarkson down. The Knights went on an 8-1 run, capped by another ace from Hangliter, to make it 17-9. Down the stretch, Emily Alexander posted two kills, including the set-ender, to give Clarkson a lopsided win.

The third and final set of the match was close up to the midway point of the game. Plattsburgh was up by two (15-13), only to see the Knights score six straight. Alexander posted a pair of kills in that stretch, Burns notched an ace, and then Jordyn Leader and Hangliter combined on a block to make it 19-15. With the momentum on their side, the Knights kept the Cardinals at a safe distance the rest of the way.

Hangliter finished with 10 kills and a .417 hitting percentage to go along with four aces in the match. Alexander hit .429 (8-2-14). Leader had four blocks and two aces, Olivia Baxter picked up 17 digs, and Ashley Currier had 25 assists and nine digs.

For Plattsburgh, Darby Collyear picked up 12 kills and three block assists and Katie Salphine also had three block assists. Iris Mulvey led the defense with 14 digs, while Emily O'Brien recorded 12 assists, 10 digs, and a pair of aces.

Things started off strong against St. John Fisher, with Clarkson claiming five of the first six points, including three kills from Conley Burns. However, the Cardinals rallied to take 11 of the next 13 points and 16 of 20 total points, to claim a 17-9 advantage (12 kills in that stretch). Fisher cruised from that point on. The second set was similar as Clarkson led by one (7-6) after a couple of blocks gave the home team the lead. Again, however, the Cardinals scored seven straight, picking up four kills and then a pair of aces from Kalyene Noble to make it 16-9, and Fisher repeated with a double-digit win in the second. Another run in the third turned a tied set (9-9) into a significant lead for St. John Fisher, as the Cardinals scored seven of eight points, capitalizing on several miscues by the Knights. Clarkson rallied a bit late, but the margin was too much to overcome.

Grace Hanson and Conley Burns posted five kills apiece in the match against St. John Fisher, while Ashley Currier had 10 kills, 10 assists, and three blocks. Jordyn Leader also posted three blocks and Olivia Baxter picked up 22 digs. Clarkson was +3 on kills-to-errors in the first set (7-4-37), but hit negative (3-9-46, 6-8-33) as St. John Fisher kept the team out of system.

The Cardinals got 14 kills and 19 digs from Kaylene Noble, and 14 more kills from Kalyna Dannenberg. Reilly Morrow had 34 assists and 15 digs, leading the team to a .214 hitting percentage (46-19-126).
