Ithaca Nips Knights, 4-3, on Opening Day of Liberty League Tournament

Rochester, NY – Rallying for two runs in the top of the sixth, the Clarkson University Softball team made things interesting in its first game of the Liberty League Tournament, but the third-seeded Golden Knights fell 4-3 to second-seeded Ithaca College to close out the first day of the conference championship.

The Golden Knights saw their record move to 22-14 on the year while Ithaca improved to 26-6. Ithaca advances to Friday morning's winners' bracket contest, while Clarkson will face Rensselaer at 12:30 pm to see which team will survive for another game later in the afternoon.

Clarkson challenged the Bombers a couple of times in the opening innings as Isabel Haspil was in scoring position in the first and Kaya Johnson was at third in the third inning, but Ithaca's defense escaped unscathed both times. The Bombers took advantage with four runs in the bottom half of the third. Ithaca opened with two straight singles, but two outs made it appear as if Devin Fitzpatrick would wiggle out of the jam. However, Elise Waddington doubled in a pair of runs and then scored on a single from Kailen Winkelblech to make it 3-0. Haley Petrucci followed with a single as well, scoring Winkelblech for a 4-0 lead.

Clarkson responded with a run in the top half of the next frame thanks to back-to-back hits from Devin Fitzpatrick and Lexi Rydelek. Emily Bulone then lifted a fly ball to the outfield, scoring a run with the sacrifice and putting the score at 4-1. Two innings later, it was Fitzpatrick again who would start the rally. Fitzpatrick, Rydelek, and Bulone delivered three straight singles, and Bulone scored pinch-runner Shaelee Torres to make it 4-2. After a walk to pinch-hitter Genevieve Mucitelli loaded the bases, Kaya Johnson stroked a single through the left side to score another run and put extreme pressure on Ithaca. The Bombers reentered starting pitcher Anna Cornell, who was removed an inning earlier, and she struck out one hitter, induced a shallow fly out in right, and then got the groundball she needed to end inning.

Although Zoey Kovach opened the seventh with a single, Clarkson was unable to tie the score as Cornell recorded three straight outs on a fly ball, strikeout, and infield popup.

Fitzpatrick, Rydelek, and Johnson each had two hits in the game for the Knights, and Bulone drove in two. Fitzpatrick was the tough luck losing pitcher, going six innings and allowing four earned runs. For Ithaca, Cornell gave up five hits and a run in six frames, striking out eight.
