Knights Shut Down in Second Half Versus #10 William Smith

Geneva, NY – Three goals in the final six-plus minutes of the second quarter had the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team thinking upset against 10th-ranked William Smith, but the Golden Knights were shut down over the final 30 minutes, ending up on the short side of a 16-4 decision on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 6-5 overall and 1-4 in the Liberty League, while the Herons moved to 8-3 and 5-0. Clarkson takes a brief break from conference opponents as the team will take on SUNY Potsdam on Wednesday.

Barely a minute into the game, Gabby Cranfield connected with Madelynn Barnum to put the Knights up 1-0, but the Herons rattled off five goals over a span of about 18 minutes to take a 5-1 advantage. Barnum then scored on a free position shot at 6:12 in the second to get things going for the Knights. Brooklynne Perrigo scored unassisted with 3:13 43maining and Barnum found the back of the net once more with only five second left in the half to put the score at 6-4 in favor of William Smith.

That final goal which provided the Knights some momentum heading into the break was one of their final gasps of offense. Clarkson was forced into nine turnovers in the second half and was outshot 23-2 in that stretch as William Smith scored six goals in the third and then put the game away with a four-goal fourth quarter.

Barnum scored three times, won three draws, had two groundballs, and caused one turnover for the Knights. Rylee Ganter chipped in four groundballs and caused two turnovers. Riley Donovan made 11 stops in the crease for the Knights.

For William Smith, Natalie Daniels led the offense with four points on three goals and an assist while also adding seven draws. Lily Kuhn caused five turnovers and scooped up four groundballs. Maura Smeader stopped three shots for the Herons.
