Knights Fall in Make Up Game to Hobart, 9-8

Watertown, NY – Cam Jerrett and Zach Worthington both homered in the early innings in an early rally by the Clarkson University Baseball team, but the Golden Knights were edged 9-8 in a must-win contest for Hobart College on Monday afternoon at Jefferson Community College.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 16-12 overall and 8-7 in the West Division, but Clarkson had already secured the second seed and home field advantage in the crossover series. The Statesmen got a much needed victory and will now await the result of St. Lawrence and University of Rochester to see if they, too, shall make the crossover series for a potential spot in the Liberty League Championship tournament.

Hobart scored six runs in the bottom of the first, manufacturing runs via fielder's choice, sacrifice fly, a two-run single, and a throwing error in the team's opening at bat. Clarkson responded with three in the top of the next inning, as Beau Vardion drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Zach Worthington hit a home run to right to score a pair. In the third, Cam Jerrett homered to left-center to the cut the margin to 6-1.

Although Hobart picked up a run in the bottom of the fourth, Clarkson completed its comeback with three in the fifth, as Jerrett again delivered an extra-base hit, doubling home CJ Kanick to get the Knights within two, and Joe Figliolino followed with a single up the middle to plate both Jerrett and Aidan Kuefner.

Hobart regained the lead in the seventh on a sac fly and then pushed its lead back to two thanks to a double from Sean Garvin, which proved to be an important insurance run. Clarkson got a run back in the top of the ninth when Aidan Kuefner singled home Kanick to make it 9-8. Kuefner would get to third on a wild pitch and later advanced on a fly out to center, but a fly out to right ended the contest.

Figliolino was 3-for-5 with two RBI and Jerrett had two hits and two RBI in the contest. CJ Kanick scored twice and was 2-for-4, while Seth Albert also delivered two hits in the game. Clarkson through four pitchers at Hobart with Mateo Sarabia taking the hard-luck loss after giving up just one hit and one run in two innings of work.
