Cortland Shuts Down Knights Offense, 12-0

Cortland, NY – Cortland State scored in six of its eight times to the plate as the Clarkson University Baseball team suffered a 12-0 defeat in non-league action Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 8-8 on the year while Cortland moved to 11-10. Clarkson returns to conference action this weekend with a scheduled three-game set against Hobart College.

Cortland picked up three runs in the bottom of the first thanks to an RBI single from JJ DeLawder and a two-run homer from Marc Stockhausen. In the top half of the next inning, the Knights threatened early when Cam Jerrett doubled to lead off the inning and then Christopher Griggs reached on a one-out walk, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the scoring chance for Clarkson. Cortland responded with a run in the bottom half of the frame when Luke Schartner doubled to plate the fourth run of the contest.

Adam Mieczkowski delivered a two-run single in the fourth and Dylan Tierney drove in a run with a single in the fifth to make it 7-0. Cortland broke the game open with several unearned runs at the end of the contest. One run came around on a throwing error in the sixth and then an unearned run came home when the next hitter grounded out. In the bottom of the seventh, the Red Dragons took advantage of the extra at bats when Zach Taro hit a pinch-hit three-run homer.

Clarkson had a chance to get on the board in the eighth with a leadoff single, but a double play eliminated that threat. Two more runners ended up in scoring position in the inning on consecutive walks and a passed ball, but again a fly out concluded the frame and kept Cortland unscathed.

Cortland starter Matthew Nochowitz tossed four innings and struck out eight, gaining the win via the pre-determined start rule as Cortland used numerous arms the rest of the way. Clarkson's pitchers combined to strike out eight, including four from CJ Kanick in three innings, two by Dan Horowitz in two frames, three from Carter Gould and two innings, and one by Tommy DiFranco in his scoreless inning of work.
