Knights Open 2025 With Pair of Losses at Middlebury

Middlebury, VT – Senior catcher Zoey Kovach posted three hits, including the 100th of her career with the Clarkson University Softball team, but the Golden Knights' offense was otherwise tamed by Middlebury College pitchers, as the Green and Gold opened the season on the short end of a doubleheader sweep, 3-1 and 5-1, on Thursday afternoon.

The Golden Knights open the year with a pair of losses and won't play again until the trip to Florida during Clarkson's spring break. During that stretch the Knights are slated to play 10 games in seven days.

In the opener, the Golden Knights had their chances, but a three-spot in the bottom half of the first would be all that Middlebury would need. Kristyn Carroll opened with a soft liner to right center and was looking for two all the way, ending up with a leadoff double. Carroll then stole third, and remained there when McKenna Lont reached on a fielder's choice. Olivia Scholes followed with a two-run double to the right center gap, and then later came around on an RBI groundout to make it 3-0 early.

Clarkson threatened in the top of the third when pinch-runner Karyssa Parker was nipped at the plate while trying to advance on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Elissa Uveino singled and stole second, but she was stranded following the third out. The Knights would pick up a run in the top of the fourth as pitcher Devin Fitzpatrick hit her 10th career home run with a one-out solo blast to left center. Two innings later, Fitzpatrick and Isabel Haspil were both on with the latter in scoring position, but a groundout ended the threat.

Both teams had just five hits in the first game as the contest took just 80 minutes to pay. Fitzpatrick took the loss, giving up three earned runs on four hits and two walks over five innings, while Amanda Corrice threw the final inning for the Knights, giving up a hit and striking out one. Middlebury's Samantha Hausman gave up one walk and five hits over seven frames, fanning eight hitters.

Game two saw Clarkson take an early lead with a run in the top of the first. Elissa Uveino led off with a walk and moved into scoring position thanks to a sacrifice bunt. Zoey Kovach then followed with a hard liner back up the middle to plate Uveino for Clarkson's first lead of the day.

Middlebury responded in the bottom half of the second when Jennifer Westphal led off the frame with a double. Westphal later stole third and then came around on an errant throw on the steal attempt to tie the contest at 1-1. The Panthers picked up two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. The first run came home when Uma Corcoran singled in a run and Westphal scored once again on a throwing error a batter later. The fifth saw two more come around for the Panthers without the benefit of a hit, the first coming home on a throwing error and the second on a bases loaded walk to make it 5-1.

Clarkson challenged in its final at bat of game two when Isabel Haspil doubled to left center and moved to third on a pass ball. Zoey Kovach then reached on an error at shortstop, but Haspil held her bag to leave runners on the corners. Following a stolen base, strikeout, and a walk the bases were loaded for Elizabeth Greco. The senior infielder looked like she might be able to drive in a run or two with a flare to center, but Kristyn Carroll raced in to make the play to end the contest.

Once again, hits were at a premium in the second game, as Clarkson had only five and Middlebury just four. Bella Hotchkiss was the tough-luck losing pitcher for the Knights, allowing three hits and a walk over four frames, while also giving up two earned runs. Abigail Jankowski tossed four innings for the Panthers with Clarkson scratching together three hits and three walks, but just one run. Emily Ye went the final three frames for Middlebury, escaping the last inning jam.
