Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Bergan's 500th Game on Clarkson Sidelines a 15-6 Win Over Oswego State

Potsdam, NY – After allowing two goals in less than 90 seconds to open the game, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team's defense clamped down on Oswego State, not allowing another goal for more than 50 minutes of game play as the Golden Knights celebrated Head Coach Bill Bergan's 500th career game with a 15-6 win on Wednesday at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-2 on the season with the win, while Oswego fell to 0-2. Clarkson is back at home on Saturday, taking on SUNY Geneseo.

Oswego won the first two faceoffs of the contest and came right down to score each time, with Corey O'Connor and Garrett Elston accounting for the two goals before the Knights even touched the ball. Clarkson won the third faceoff of the game and tallied on Sam Mancabelli's shot to get Clarkson on the board, and that began an impressive run for the Knights both offensively and defensively. The Knights limited Oswego to only two more shots on goal after the Lakers second goal, while Clarkson rattled off six before the end of the quarter, with the first five coming from different sticks.

Although the scoring was limited to just two goals by the Knights in the second, Clarkson's defense was dominant in the period, causing seven turnovers by the Lakers against just three shots on goal. It was more of the same in the third, as Oswego had 11 turnovers and was only 3-for-8 on clears while accumulating only two shots on goal.

Clarkson continued to add to its 8-2 halftime lead with four goals in the third, including three in a stretch of less than three minutes halfway through the fame. In the opening minutes of the fourth, the lead expanded to 14-2, including a patient deke by Robert Fox that froze the Oswego defense and allowed him to shoot one-on-one with the goalie. Oswego scored a few in the middle of the period when the benches emptied, but Clarkson cruised to the win.

Robert Fox (2-2-4) and Sam Mancabelli (3-1-4) tied for the team lead in points while Ian Erskine, Connor Matthews, Vincent Lavarnway, and Connor Holly each contributed three points in a balanced offensive effort. Defensively, Matt Szwagulinski forced four turnovers and had four groundballs, while Logan Wilkinson posted six groundballs and Andrew Kearney tacked on four groundballs. Griffin Emerson made nine saves in 55 minutes of play in the Clarkson crease.

For Oswego, Corey O'Connor scored three times and Garrett Elson and Emmett Starowicz each had a goal and an assist. Logan Prescott led the Lakers with 10 groundballs. Seamus Hand had 17 saves in 51 minutes for the Lakers.

Clarkson won the battle of shots overall (54-26), shots on goal (33-16), and groundballs (42-32), while forcing a turnover on eight of Oswego's 24 clear attempts.
