Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Alfieri Records Six of Seven Points in First Half in Knights' 19-7 Win Over Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – Significant offensive bursts at the start of the first and at the end of the second put the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team in command early and the Golden Knights never looked back, cruising past SUNY Potsdam xx-x in non-league action Tuesday evening.

The Golden Knights moved to 7-3 on the season while SUNY Potsdam fell to 4-2. Clarkson has nothing but Liberty League games remaining on the schedule for the rest of the spring, beginning with a matchup against Skidmore College on Saturday afternoon.

Clarkson took little time taking control of Tuesday night's contest as Connor Matthews, Robert Fox, and Alex Seiler each scored goals for the Knights in the first three minutes of the contest. The Knights' defense also stood out in the early going, causing numerous turnovers to keep Potsdam's offense from getting any kind of momentum of extended possession time. After two more goals near the midway point of the opening quarter, the Bears did get on the board in the last two minutes, scoring goals only 34 seconds apart to put a little life in the home squad.

The Knights picked up one more goal in the early moments of the second quarter, but it would be some time before the scoreboard would change again. However, once Clarkson recorded its seventh goal of the game, the numbers changed frequently as the Knights tallied seven times in less than eight minutes to end the half. Alex Alfieri recorded his fourth goal of the game and sixth point of the contest just before the buzzer sounded to put the Knights up 13-2 at the break.

After a relatively even third quarter, the Knights scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter to build an 18-4 lead with a little over eight minutes remaining.

Clarkson finished with a 48-22 edge in shots and a 26-13 advantage in shots on goal. Though Potsdam went 20-for-29 on faceoffs, the groundball margin was barely in the Bears' favor (35-33).

Alex Alfieri led the Knights with seven points on four goals and three assists, while Connor Matthews (3-1), Andrew Kearney (2-2), and Joe Kelly (2-2) had four points apiece. Connor Holly and Robert Fox also scored three times each. Matt Szwagulinski was particularly busy on defense with six caused turnovers and six groundballs

For Potsdam, Owen Walsh had four points on three goals and an assist, and no other player had more than one point. Drew Costello won 18 of his 24 faceoffs and had nine groundballs.
