Winn Nets Two, Knights Defense Consistent in 4-1 ECAC Quarterfinals Clincher

Potsdam, NY – Killing off three penalties and surviving a four-minute stretch down a skater due to a pulled goaltender by the visitors, the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team outlasted Quinnipiac University 4-1 to claim the best-of-three ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals series on Sunday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights improved to 24-11-2 on the year while the Bobcats had their season come to a close at 22-12-4. Clarkson advances to the ECAC Championship weekend, playing Cornell University in the semifinals next Friday.

Post Game Interviews

As has been the case the previous two games in the series, both defenses limited the chances on goal, as each team put together just five shots on goal in the opening period of Sunday's contest. One of the best chances of the first frame was not among those attempts, however. Late in a power play chance, Anne Cherkowski had plenty of daylight from the right circle, but her wrist shot rung the post at 9:38. That missed opportunity could have haunted the Knights, except that Clarkson would score four minutes later.

Quinnipiac was carrying the puck into the Clarkson zone when the combination of a turnover and a change by the Bobcats allowed a 3-on-2 for the Golden Knights. The sixth skater entering the fray was Clarkson's Haley Winn as a drop pass found her in the slot and a quick wrist shot put the Green and Gold up 1-0 at 13:24 with assists going to Caroline Goffredo and Keira Hurry.

The Bobcats nearly tied the game on a breakaway 90 seconds into the second period, but Holly Gruber stood tall to make the save. Clarkson had its chances in the next few minutes as well before the two teams began a march towards the penalty boxes. Quinnipiac was on the power play for a minute at 8:04 before getting called for one an infraction a minute later. Offsetting holding calls were called shortly after the first penalty ended, but in all that time, neither team could score.

That would end roughly six minutes later when Sophie Urban was called on a penalty that sent Haley Winn to the ground in the Clarkson defensive end. On the ensuing power play, Nicole Gosling found Rhea Hicks on the opposite side of the crease and Hicks banked one in off Kaley Doyle's pad at the 17:36 mark. The second assist on the power play goal went to Sena Catterall.

Clarkson continued to kill off penalties at the tail end of the second and at the start of the third, but Quinnipiac finally broke through late in the third period. The score was somewhat fluky, as Maya Labad skated up the left side into the Clarkson zone. Trying to send the puck back near the slot to Kahlen Lamarche, the pass wasn't quite on target, but it worked out nevertheless as the puck went off a skate and into the net at 14:14.

Only 20 seconds later, the Bobcats pulled their goaltender with well over five minutes to go. Both teams spent much of the next three minutes blocking one another's scoring attempts, with the Knights doing so down a skater and Quinnipiac halting shots at the empty net at the other end. That streak would come to an end for the Bobcats, though, when Anne Cherkowski picked up possession shortly after a faceoff in the Knights' defensive end and snuck a 150-foot shot inside the left post at the other end to make it 3-1 at 17:30. A minute later, the Knights put the game away when Haley Winn did the same, gaining the puck and skating up ice. She eluded one defender and took her time with a wrist shot from the left circle at 18:25.

Clarkson won the battle of shots on goal 24-19 and total shots at 60-52. The Knights went 1-for-3 on the power play and the Bobcats were scoreless in three tries. Holly Gruber was one skate deflection away from a shutout, posting 18 saves in the contest, while Doyle had 20 stops for Quinnipiac.
