Davenport, F.L- Five players registered a multi-hit outing in the opening game as the Clarkson University Baseball team split a Saturday doubleheader with previously unbeaten SUNY Brockport in Central Florida.
The Knights move to 5-2 overall while Brockport goes to 9-1 after the day. The Golden Eagles were 8-0 headed into the day having won their first Florida matchup with Immaculata on Friday. Clarkson will take on Fredonia at 12:15 on Sunday, back in Davenport.
Game 1: Clarkson would jump on the board early in the top of the first courtesy of a James Mason single which scored Aidan Kuefner and Joe Figliolino as well following some throwing mishaps from the infield. Brockport would go on to even the game at two in the bottom half of the frame as two errant throws allowed Frank Vanzillotta and Jason Story to cross the plate.
A throwing error from the Brockport third baseman in the top of the second off a soft hit from Kuefner, flew over the first baseman, bringing CJ Cartier to home for a 3-2 advantage. The lead would not last long for the Knights though as Zach Eldred, who was also doing mound duties for the Golden Eagles, connected on a three-run shot over the left field wall in the bottom of the second, pushing the scoreline to 5-3, in favor of Brockport.
Clarkson was able to cut the lead to one following a Cartier single that scored Cam Jerrett in the third and eventually knotted the game up in the fourth at five, with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Figliolino, scoring Kuefner. Brockport added another in the bottom of the fourth as the 6-5 score would last until the top of the seventh inning. A Figliolino lead-off single in the top half of the seventh would be followed by a single off the bat of Jerrett would put runners on first and third with no outs and Clarkson knocking on the door. In the next at-bat, James Mason would rip the ball just inside third base down the left field line scoring Figliolino and advancing Jerrett to third. A pinch-hit single from Christopher Griggs scored both Mason and Jerrett tacking on some insurance runs for the Knights with the lead at 8-6. Jason McGee stood strong on the mound in the bottom of the seventh as the Knights would hand Brockport their first loss of 2025.
McGee earned the win for Clarkson with just one hit and three strikeouts over 3 and ⅔ innings pitched. Mason supplied three hits and two RBIs, while Kuefner, Figliolino, Jerrett, and Cartier all had two of their own as the Knights registered 12 as a team in total.
Game 2: In the nightcap, Jerrett would get the Knights on the board early again with a single to right field, scoring Kuefner from second. Brockport would knot the score up quickly again in the top of the third, this time thanks to a sacrifice fly by Matthew Coon. The Golden Eagles would add another in the fourth and two more in the fifth to stretch things to 5-1.
A sixth inning rally would fall just short for Clarkson as Mason would drive in another two runs with a single to right field giving the Knights some chance with the score at 5-3. Following a quick top half of the final frame the offense for Clarkson just couldn't materialize in the final bottom half, going 1-2-3 and ending the contest.
Kuefner, Jerrett, Mason and Griggs all connected for base knocks in the effort for Clarkson while Jacob Shirley and Nathan Hartley split time on the mound for Clarkson with Shirley going four innings in the start with three strikeouts and Hartley putting in 3 innings in relief for the Knights, supplying four strikeouts with just three hits.
