Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Knights Defense Strong in Second Half, Downing Brockport 17-6

Potsdam, NY – In the second half, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team's defense was tenacious from end-to-end, allowing no goals and only one shot on goal over the final 30 minutes to claim an 17-6 non-league win over Brockport at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights evened their record at 1-1 on the season while Brockport, too, saw its record go to 1-1. Clarkson is on the road this weekend, heading to Rochester to take on Nazareth University.

Brockport got off to a solid start defensively and kept the Knights off the board in the early going. The Golden Eagles took advantage with a score at 10:45 from Marc Zappulla and another by Nick Maslin at 9:26 to take an early 2-0 lead. However, Clarkson rattled off five scores in a stretch of six-plus minutes, including two tallies by Vincent Lavarnway. Although, Brockport would get back to within one near the start of the second quarter thanks to consecutive scores from Zappulla and Jack Rice, the Knights immediately responded with goals from Mario Streiff and Andrew Kearney by the midway point of the quarter.

It was all Clarkson in the second half of the game, as the Knights rattled off a 4-0 third quarter and added five more in the fourth. Clarkson enjoyed a 27-10 advantage in shots in the final 30 minutes, including a 17-1 lead in shots on goal. Much of that limitation for the Brockport offense came via the Clarkson defense, as the Knights kept the Golden Eagles to a success rate of just 6-for-14 on clears in the third and fourth quarters, forcing 15 turnovers in that span.

Sam Mancabelli led the Knights' offense with five points, scoring twice himself and assisting on three other goals. Alex Seiler recorded four goals, including a couple of rifle shots from the outside, and Vincent Lavarnway tallied four points on two goals and two assists. Alex Alfieri and Connor Matthew also recorded three points apiece. Seiler also notched eight groundballs. Lavarnway, Matt Szwagulinski, Zach Tiffany, and Jack Garvey each caused two turnovers.

For Brockport, Jack Rice had four points with a goal and three assists while both Marc Zappulla and Nick Maslin scored two goals. Nicolas Ange and AJ Thomas each had four groundballs for the Eagles.
