Three Records Fall, CIbelli Hits NCAA Cut for Knights on Day Two of RIT Invite

Rochester, NY – Gavin Cibelli produced a qualifying number for the NCAA Diving Regionals and Evan Paneras broke a pair of school marks in the butterfly events to highlight the Clarkson University Swimming & Diving team's efforts on day two of the Don Richards Invitational, hosted by RIT.

The Golden Knights' men finished second out of six teams with 764 points, trailing only the host team RIT (1256) and ahead of Skidmore (600), St. Lawrence (210), Jamestown Community College (183) and Nazareth (165). Clarkson's women finished in fourth place with 398 points, behind Skidmore (995), RIT (823) and Nazareth (411) but in front of St. Lawrence (352.5), Mount Holyoke (271.5), and Jamestown Community College (156).

2025 Don Richards Invitational Results

Cibelli scored 445.20 points to place second in the 1-meter dive, doing so in an 11-dive program and good enough to give him an NCAA cut for regionals in March. It also was just a handful of points short of Brent Reid's school mark set at the 2019 Liberty League Championships.

Freshman Evan Paneras won a pair of events on Saturday, claiming the top time first in the 100 butterfly in 49.94 seconds, breaking a 28-year-old mark of Charlie Weisman from March 1997, and then the top mark in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:52.82, surpassing a mark of Jacob Baker set in February 2020. Paneras barely edged the second swimmer in the latter event, winning by .01 seconds.

Besides Paneras winning a pair of events, Mason Cartier also claimed the top spot in the 100 backstroke in 53.47. He later took third in the 200 backstroke as well, finishing in 1:58.40. Gavin Stuhler had a pair of top-seven finishes, taking the seventh spot in the 200 freestyle (1:47.60) and sixth in the 100 freestyle (47.81). Owen White also was in the top five twice, placing third in the 400 individual medley (4:16.64) and fifth in the 200 backstroke (2:02.45), while Andrew Sammons was fifth in both the 100 breaststroke (1:00.07) and 200 breaststroke (2:14.19). Casey Everett also finished fourth in the 1650 freestyle (17:04.70).

Clarkson also set a new mark in the 200 medley relay, trimming nearly a half second off the mark set in February 2020, as the group of Cartier, Sammons, Paneras, and Stuhler combined for 1:34.35 to place second in that event. Later on in the meet, White, Paneras, Andrew Sypko, and Stuhler combined to place third in the 400 freestyle relay (3:12.72).

The Golden Knights' women placed fifth in the 200 medley relay as the grouping of Aurora Zary, Fiona Reilly, Paige Davis, and Addison Gorton combined for a time of 1:59.01. Zary, Natasha Hurff, Kirsten Iles, and Gorton also ended up in fourth place in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:49.47.

The top individual performances on Saturday for the women came from the diving board and near the end of the day, as Evelyn Vieira scored third-place points in the 3-meter dive with 355.80 and Katelyn Otis took third in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:28.76. Both Natasha Hurff and Aurora Zary placed fifth in their respective events, with Hurff taking that spot in the 200 freestyle (2:02.06) and Zary finishing the 200 backstroke in 2:13.89. Fiona Reilly took seventh in the 200 breaststroke (2:39.92), Paige Davis took eighth in the 400 individual medley (5:12.80), and Iles also placed eighth in the 200 freestyle (2:05.30).
