Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

RPI Keeps Knights Off the Board Until Late, Downs CU 5-1

Troy, NY – The Saturday woes continued for the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team as the Golden Knights came up short of a weekend sweep, falling to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 5-1 in ECAC action on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 4-6 on the year and 1-1 in ECAC Hockey, while RPI improved to 2-8 and 2-2 in league play. Clarkson will be home next weekend, facing Harvard and Dartmouth on Friday and Saturday at Cheel Arena.

Clarkson controlled the play for much of the contest against RPI on Saturday, but it was the Engineers that would find the back of the net at key times in the contest. The Golden Knights finished the game with a 28-24 lead in shots on goal (53-43 in total shots) and also won 29 of 54 tries on faceoffs.

In the early going, it appeared as if the Knights would get on the scoreboard first when a goal made it through the RPI defense at 4:58, which very well could have changed the outlook of the game had it stuck. A quick review revealed that one of the Golden Knights skated near the crease and then got bumped into the RPI goaltender, Bruno Bruveris, knocking his head aside and making enough contact to pull the score off the board.

Clarkson had a chance to get on the board again about nine minutes later when RPI was called for a penalty. Justin Cote put one shot on the pads of Bruveris and the rebound was also denied before a scrum in front ended the peril for the Engineers.

Despite being on the short end offensively in the first period, it was the Engineers that scored the game's opening goal. A turnover behind the net allowed Ethan Bono to center the puck in the slot to Dovar Tinling, and he finished to the right post to make it 1-0 at 17:16.

Not many chances were on net in the second period, but Clarkson would get some chances while on the power play just short of the midway point. Clarkson began to assert itself offensively with a lengthy run of pressure in the RPI defensive zone, but once again it was RPI that somehow came away with a goal.

The Engineers weathered the Clarkson run of offense and picked up an insurance goal just before the end of the second period. Again the goal came with the start beginning from behind the goal as Luciano Wilson fed the puck to the top of the crease, locating Rainers Rullers for a goal at 18:16.

RPI picked up an insurance goal early on in the third when Trevor Russell cleaned up a rebound at the bottom of the right circle, going top shelf over the shoulder of Clarkson goalie Keenan Rancier.

Clarkson got back into the contest with a goal at the 8:00 mark as the Knights possessed the puck in the corner, working to behind the net where Ryan Bottrill found Jared Mangan in front, and Mangan found a bit of space between Bruveris's right shoulder and the post.

That would be as close as the Knights would get as RPI scored twice on special teams, picking up its fourth goal on the power play and its fifth while shorthanded. The first of those two came out of a reset from behind the RPI net when Luciano Wilson picked up the puck with a head of steam and skated down the left side and into the zone. From the top of the circle Wilson centered the pass for Filip Sitar in the slot and he deposited it in the back of the net at 13:45. About four minutes later, it was a right-place, right-time goal for Sitar. Clarkson was skating 6-on-4 after an RPI penalty and a vacated net for an extra attacker, but Sitar was able to gain possession in his own defensive zone near the boards of the left circle and fired the puck 150 feet through open ice and into the net at 17:41.

Keenan Rancier finished the game allowing four goals while making 19 saves for the Knights and Bruno Bruveris had 27 stops and one goal given up for RPI.
