Knights Pour in 53 Second-Half Points in 83-77 Win Over St. Lawrence

Potsdam, NY – Sophomore Braeden Burns was lethal from both the paint and the perimeter in scoring a season-high 29 points as the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team held on for an 83-77 win over St. Lawrence University on Monday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in Liberty League games, including a key sweep of the Saints that may prove important for tiebreakers down the road. The Saints dropped to 7-3 and 1-3 in conference games. Clarkson remains home for the weekend when it hosts Bard College and Vassar College.

Clarkson hit the 60 point mark with a little over 11 minutes remaining the game, becoming the first team to score 60 against the Saints in 2024-25, as St. Lawrence entered the game leading the nation in scoring defense (52.7 ppg). When the Knights closed with 83 points, it was the most that St. Lawrence allowed since December 3, 2022 when the Saints gave up 89 to Skidmore, a stretch of 58 games. More impressively, Clarkson scored 53 points in the second half against the Saints. The last time St. Lawrence even allowed 40 points in any half to an opponent was more than a year ago, giving up 42 to Vassar on January 5, 2024.

St. Lawrence did a good job of keeping the Knights from getting open looks on the perimeter in the first half and held a six-point advantage at the break. However, Clarkson stepped back slightly to get some better shots and began hitting long-range shots with great frequency, burying 60% (9-for-15) from outside in the final 20 minutes. Those 3-pointers came from a variety of options, including Steve DeRegis, Braeden Burns, Matteo Sinon, and Jack Dalgety, as the Knights asserted themselves on offense to create a 16-point lead with four minutes to go.

The Saints then began to utilize a full-court press in hopes of getting back into the game, and the strategy worked as the Knights struggled to get the ball over half course outside of free throw shooting opportunities. Likewise, St. Lawrence had an outstanding run on offense to get back into the game, making some key 3-pointers to cut the margin to as few as three points with under a minute to go. Fortunately for Clarkson, Steve DeRegis hit a pair of free throws to provide some breathing room and Lorenzo Rappa snagged a key rebound off a St. Lawrence miss and nailed a pair of freebies at the other end to provide the final margin.

Burns scored 29 points of the team's first 49 points in the game before exhaustion set in, but classmate Steve DeRegis then got hot from outside to score 19 points, finishing 5-for-9 from beyond the arc. Finn Cork also delivered a solid stat line with 11 points, 13 rebounds, and 6 assists.

For St. Lawrence, Dan Anderson nearly doubled his season-high with 24 points, going 9-for-12 from the floor with five 3-pointers. Adam Dudzinski came up just short of a double-double with 17 points and eight rebounds.
