Late Goal Sends Knights to 2-1 Loss at Skidmore

Saratoga Springs, NY – A goal with just over 10 minutes to go from Hannah Fetzer broke a tie, sending the Clarkson University Women's Soccer to a 2-1 defeat against Skidmore College in the Liberty League opener on Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their mark drop to 3-4-1 and 0-1-0 in conference, while Skidmore remained unbeaten at 6-0-1 and 1-0-0. Clarkson closes out its lengthy string of road games on Saturday when it heads to Rochester to take on RIT.

Despite carrying possession for much of the half, the Golden Knights couldn't find a lot in the way of offense, registering just three shots and two corners, though two of the shots made their way on goal. It was Skidmore that would score early on and hold a lead throughout much of the contest. When a ball was flicked forward by Ella Stone, Abby Lewis out muscled two Clarkson defenders, even knocking one down shoulder-to-shoulder in the penalty area, creating a one-on-one with Molly DiCaprio. Lewis was able to shoot to her right, putting the Thoroughbreds up 1-0 at the 5:05 mark on the first half.

Clarkson controlled the start of the second half as well, though most of the shots weren't too challenging for Skidmore goalkeeper Avery Rogers. That would change midway through the second when the Knights picked up their third corner kick opportunity in a stretch of less than 11 minutes. This time it would result in a goal, as Julia Tylar's pass would find the head of first-year collegian Brooke Butler just in front of Rogers, and Butler was able to knock the ball into the top of the net at the 66:00 mark.

It appeared as if the two teams were headed towards a tie, but late in the contest Skidmore was able to utilize a play-on to score the game-winner. A foul occurred near midfield, but the ball bounced to Hannah Fetzer more than 40 yards away from the goal. Fetzer made her turn and took the ball up the right side, with the two teams essentially even in offensive players and defenders. Fetzer chose to never relinquish the ball, carrying it in deep on the outside of the penalty area, eventually lofting a shot from around the six-yard line, and the attempt sailed just over the outreached hands of a jumping DiCaprio, settling into the back corner of the net at 80:26. The Knights would not register another shot for the remainder of the contest.

Clarkson finished with an 11-10 edge in shots, though each team had six shots on goal. Clarkson also had five corner kick chances while Skidmore was without one. DiCaprio made four saves and Rogers stopped five shots.
