Late Scores Send Knights to Defeat Against Sixth-Ranked Rochester

Potsdam, NY – Senior Emily Davis scored for the second time in as many games to put the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team on top early, but sixth-ranked University of Rochester found the back of the net four times in the final 22 minutes  to gain a 4-1 win over the Golden Knights on Sunday at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 1-1 on the season, while Rochester improved to 2-0. Clarkson will now play the remainder of September on the road, beginning with a game at York College next Saturday.

From the get-go, it appeared as if the scoreboard would be busy as each team put together some solid chances. Rochester's game plan was apparent from the start, as the team tried to put together passes to move up the field. One of those times it failed the Yellowjackets, as off a goal kick, the team played the ball short in its own defensive end. Emily Davis stepped forward and intercepted a pass just outside the penalty area and shot lefty to the post, putting one past Rochester goalkeeper Grace Kuropatkin in the 12th minute.

Although the shots only registered 3-2 in the first half, each team applied offensive pressure in the opening 45 minutes. That would continue in the second, with Clarkson nearly gaining a 2-0 advantage 10 minutes in. Kuropatkin made a solid stop near her right post off on a shot from Chloe Hodge, then recovered back to the other side when the rebound was nearly put away by Callie Abel.

That missed opportunity ended up allowing Rochester to stay confident in the game, and the Yellowjackets took advantage of some tired legs from the home team. Rochester simply played the ball forward in several scoring chances and finally broke through in the 69th minute. The Yellowjackets gained advantage near the midfield and Natalie Kocsis popped a pass over the Clarkson defense to Maya Bravo, where she was able to take a shot from the right side of the box to tie the game 1-1. Less than a minute later it was Natalie Santangelo who scored on a similar goal, breaking out for a 1-on-1 against DiCaprio. The senior goalkeeper tipped the ball away, but Santangelo recovered and scored on an otherwise empty net to make it 2-1.

The Yellowjackets tacked on two more in the final eight minutes. Bravo played a ball through traffic on the right side to Santangelo and she shot to the opposite post to put the tally at 3-1 at 82:03. With less than three minutes to go, Rochester was able to get past the defensive midfield for a 3-on-2 situation. Santangelo had options in the middle and to the far corner of the penalty area. She decided to go with the further pass, finding Sydney Holmes, who was able to just slip one around DiCaprio's arms at 87:38.

Rochester finished up 15-6 in shots, though the shots on goal tally was closer at 8-5. The Yellowjackets also had seven corners to Clarkson's two. Each goalkeeper made four saves.
