Knights Split With Saints in Liberty League Crossover Doubleheader

Canton, NY – For the second time in eight days, the Clarkson University Baseball team and St. Lawrence University split a doubleheader, this time with the Saints winning the first 9-3 and the Golden Knights taking game two 14-3 on Saturday afternoon at Tom Fay Field.

The Golden Knights ended their season with a record of 11-19 overall while the Saints moved to 13-19.

In the opener, Clarkson's Nicholas Hofacker tossed three scoreless frames with four strikeouts before the Knights got on the board. Clarkson scored twice in the fourth as a Cam Jerrett double plated both Pat Elliott and Joe Pagano. St. Lawrence broke through in the fifth after leaving two runners on in both the third and fourth innings. The Saints loaded the bases on a hit by pitch, infield single, and a walk, allowing Brett Federico's sacrifice fly to push across the home team's first run. Willie Landman then tied the game with a double and Sean Desjardins two-run double cleared the bases, two coming in on the hit and another on an error.

St. Lawrence picked up two runs in both the sixth and seventh as well, as Tim Connor hit a two-run homer in sixth and Jackson Brinker singled in two more the next inning. Clarkson was squeak one more across in the eighth. Kent Wilson singled and Elliott doubled to right-center to put runners on second and third, but only Wilson would score on Joe Pagano's RBI ground out. The run was Wilson's 100th career run while at Clarkson.

James Mason, Wilson, Elliott, and Pagano each had two hits in the game for the Knights. Brinker was 4-for-5 while both Connor and Desjardins had two hits for the Saints.

In game two, Clarkson's offense was busy, scoring three in the each of the first three odd-numbered innings. In the first, Elliott reached on an error and drove in a run in the process and Joe Figliolino followed with a two-run double to make it 3-0. Two innings later, Elliott again reached on an error and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Figliolino. The big blow came off the bat of Cam Jerrett as he drove in Aidan Kuefner and himself on a home run to make it 6-0. St. Lawrence did pick up two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Knights responded with three more in their next at bat. Kuefner led off with a double then stole third. After a walk and steal from Figliolino, Jerrett singled home one run through the left side and when the ball was bobbled, Figliolino scored as well. Will Roda later doubled in another run to make it 9-2.

Clarkson tacked on insurance runs in the seventh and eighth. James Mason singled in a run during the seventh for the first extra run, and then Figliolino and Roda each doubled in a run the eighth to make it 12-2. James Mason tacked on two more in the eighth as he singled to right, plating both Roda and Jerrett. The Saints did score a run in the bottom half of the eighth, but it wasn't enough to keep the game from being called on a run-rule.

Mason finished 4-for-6 with three RBI, Roda was 3-for-5 with two RBI, Figliolino drove in four, Jerrett drove in three and both Figliolino and Kuefner scored three times for the Knights. Ben Hand struck out six in four innings while Tommy DiFranco ended up earning the win by tossing two scoreless frames in the middle of the contest.
