16th-Ranked RPI Downs Clarkson, 8-0 and 8-1

Potsdam, NY – Against one of the top statistical pitching staffs in the country, the Clarkson University Softball team could squeak across just one run in 13 innings as the Golden Knights fell to 16th-ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 8-0 and 8-1 in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 11-21 overall and 3-9 in the Liberty League, while the Engineers moved to 29-2-1 and 10-2. Clarkson has two doubleheaders remaining on the slate, playing a non-league twin bill against Plattsburgh State on Tuesday and then closing out the conference schedule next weekend at Skidmore College.

In the first game, the Engineers ended up with a run-rule win, but the box score somewhat belied the one-sidedness of the contest. Sydney Speanburg singled in a run in the second inning, but that was all of the scoring until the fifth inning. In that frame, RPI played small to start and scored a run on a sacrifice bunt by Evann McDowell which was flipped away on a play at the plate, allowing runners to move up a base each. Liv Vizzini then doubled to left to score two and put the tally at 4-0. In the sixth, the Engineers picked up four runs without a particularly hard hit ball. Callista Adorno singled through the left side and then both Catherine Worthington and Speanburg singled on bunts. Emma Newberry singled to left to score a run and make it 5-0. Erin Askins flew out to left for a sac fly, and Vizzini singled to left for two more RBI, making it 8-0.

Clarkson's only challenge on offense came in the fourth inning on back-to-back hits from Molly Pezzano and Elizabeth Greco, but a pop up and line out ended the threat.

In game two, RPI put up crooked numbers in the second, fourth and fifth to take an early 8-1 lead, which was where the final tally would end up. The Engineers scored twice in the second thanks to a two-out double to right-center from Sydney Speanburg. RPI added a run in the third on Gabby Comeau's single to right, but the Knights got the run back in the bottom half of the inning. Bridget Kerwin led off and reached when she was hit by a pitch, and the junior infielder advanced on a sacrifice bunt and another ground out. That allowed her to score easily on Katy Aldous's single to left, putting the score at 3-1.

In the fourth, RPI picked up two runs, one coming in a wild pitch and the other on a sac fly. The fifth saw three more come around, the first on an RBI single from Catherine Worthington and the other two on a double to left-center by Olivia Termi.

Devin Fitzpatrick took the loss in game one and finished off the second contest, allowing seven earned runs over 8.1 innings. Lily Corrice threw the first 4.2 innings against the Engineers in game two, and was saddled with the loss in that contest. Brooke Sroczinski struck out six and allowed two hits over five innings for the Engineers in the opener and Ava Markert fanned a pair and gave up two hits in five innings in game two. Alexis Cooke threw the final innings in each of those games for RPI.
