Clarkson's Late Rally Comes Up Short Against St. Lawrence

Potsdam, NY - Two runs came in on a single from Cam Jerrett in the bottom of the ninth, but the Clarkson University Baseball team's late rally fell short against St. Lawrence, as the Golden Knights dropped a 5-3 decision in the first game of the three-game Liberty League series on Friday afternoon.

The Golden Knights will play a doubleheader at St. Lawrence on Saturday, beginning at 12:00 noon. Clarkson fell to 9-17 on the season while St. Lawrence improved to 11-17.

In a fast-moving contest, the first three frames when by quickly as neither team could push any runs across. That would change in the fourth when both teams broke through. St. Lawrence got things rolling on a soft single to left-center from John Donnellan, which scored John Gannon, and in the bottom half of the inning Kent Wilson hit a solo shot to left for his first home run of the season. The Saints picked up two in their next at bat when Matt Davis plated a pair on a single to left and St. Lawrence picked up another run in the top of the seventh on Gannon's home run to center field. Gannon doubled in another run in the ninth to give St. Lawrence a 5-1 edge.

Clarkson began to get to St. Lawrence starter Michael Hutchins in the ninth, as the team strung together a few hits in short order. Joe Figliolino led off with a single through the right side and Kent Wilson immediately followed with a hit up the middle. Robert Fratangelo reached on a fielder's choice that was almost an error, putting runners on the corners. Cam Jerrett then hit a flare to right to score Figliolino, and Fratangelo ended up scoring when the throw got away as he was going from first to third. Michael Watson came on in relief of Hutchins and retired the last two hitters of the game.

Nicholas Hofacker took the loss, allowing four hits and three unearned runs  while striking out four in five frames. Derrick Lewis tossed three more innings and struck out two, and Carter Gould fanned one in one inning of work. Joe Figliolino was 2-for-4 and Kent Wilson was 2-for-3 for the Knights.
