Last Second Goal Puts Knights Down to SLU, 15-14

Potsdam, NY – St. Lawrence's Neve Ley scored with nine seconds left to complete its comeback over the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team, as the Golden Knights fell 15-14 to the Saints in Liberty League action Wednesday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 8-7 overall and 3-6 in the Liberty League while St. Lawrence edged up to 4-11 and 3-6. Clarkson needs a win against Rensselaer on Saturday and a St. Lawrence loss to RIT to earn the seventh spot in the Liberty League.

Things looked good at the start as Clarkson rolled out to a 6-1 lead in the first quarter, including five goals in the first eight-plus minutes of the period. Madelynn Barnum scored while a player up at the 6:51 mark to make it 5-1, becoming the Golden Knights' all-time leading goal scorer in the process. Barnum's 183rd career goal set a new standard, passing the 182 goals scored by Alyssa Cristaldi (2010-2013).

Barnum and the Knights weren't done, increasing the lead to 8-2 when the senior midfielder scored at 10:32 of the second quarter. However, St. Lawrence responded with four of the next five goals, including one with just 16 seconds left in the half from Jolie Osborne.

With the game tightened up at the break, St. Lawrence's confidence was renewed in the third quarter as the Saints produced five goals in seven minutes, including four while they were up a player due to cards whistled on the Golden Knights. The fourth of those goals gave St. Lawrence its first lead of the game, but the Knights came right back to tie the game and then regain the lead, picking up a goal while up an attacker thanks to Makenna Cassin at the 4:12 mark.

The fourth quarter was the quietest period in terms of offense, as the two teams scored a combined five goals, each swaying momentum briefly. The Knights took the lead twice, first on Cassin's goal at 14:28 (13-12) and then on Brooklyne Perrigo's score at 4:52 (14-13). However, Neve Ley found the back of the net at 3:29 and then scored the game-winner while St. Lawrence was up an attacker in the waning seconds.

Madelynn Barnum posted an impressive all-around stat line, scoring seven points on five goals and two assists while also contributing four groundballs, five caused turnovers, and 13 draw controls. Cassin scored four points on three goals and an assist and Hailey Millington also had three goals with four draws. Julia Lavarnway found her teammates for three assists as well, and Ireland Morgia had five draws.

For St. Lawrence, Liz Evans and Neve Ley each scored four goals, Jessica LaPlaca scored three times, and Caroline Hamilton added three points on two goals and one assist. Haley Sundstrom also had four groundballs and four draws.

Clarkson outshot St. Lawrence 28-25, with the margin being larger for shots on goal (26-17). The Knights also had 22 draws to the Saints' 11. Courtney Lynn made 12 saves for St. Lawrence while Clare Tucker and Jennaca McGill combined for two saves for Clarkson.
