Knights Drop 16-6 Decision to Fifth-Ranked St. Lawrence

Potsdam, NY – Getting shots through the defense was a challenge for the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team on Wednesday, as fifth-ranked St. Lawrence University kept the Golden Knights' chances on goal to a minimum in a 16-6 Liberty League decision at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 6-8 overall and 0-5 in the Liberty League while St. Lawrence improved to 13-1 and 5-0 in conference games. Clarkson can still reach the conference tournament with wins over Ithaca and Vassar in the next 10 days with a little other help.

Although the shots were relatively close (24-20) in the first half, the Saints' attempts were able to get past the Clarkson defenders and on to the Knights' net, while Clarkson's attempts seemed to go wide, high, or get blocked by St. Lawrence defenders. The shots on goal in the first 30 minutes of the game were 16-5, allowing the Saints to build a 4-0 lead in the first quarter, which included two goals in the last minute of the opening 15 minutes, and a 7-0 advantage in the first half.

It wasn't until the final portion of the third quarter that the Knights were able to get on the scoreboard when Sam Mancabelli found Sebastian Geiger on the right side with 4:03 to go in the period. That jumpstarted Clarkson's offense somewhat, as Matt Reilly scored twice in the last three minutes of the period to cut the margin to 11-3.

St. Lawrence, however, responded with the first three goals of the fourth quarter to return its lead to double digits. Andrew Kearney picked up a pair of goals and an assist for the Knights in a stretch of less than three minutes midway through the fourth quarter, but by that point the Knights were in too much of a hole to recover.

Kearney led Clarkson's offense with three points (two goals, one assist) and Matt Reilly scored twice. Logan Wilkinson had six groundballs and Jack Garvey caused two turnovers with four groundballs. Matt Szwagulinski caused four turnovers and picked up two groundballs.

For St. Lawrence, Daniel Mahoney scored four points on three goals and an assist and Bobby Wells contributed four points thanks to two goals and two assists. Ben Hutchinson also had three points with two goals and one helper. Paddy Condon won 15 faceoffs and had 10 groundballs and Tripp Clark added in six more groundballs.

Michael Marinello made 11 saves on 15 shots on goal for the Saints, while Eric Gellasch (11 saves) and Griffin Emerson (four saves) combined for 15. St. Lawrence had a small advantage in shots (44-43), but led in shots on goal 31-20.
