Knights Sweep SUNY Canton in Softball Season-Opener

Potsdam – In a doubleheader rescheduled from mid-April to take advantage of the quality weather in early March, the Clarkson University Softball team swept a twin bill against SUNY Canton, winning 11-0 and 14-2 on Tuesday afternoon at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights may pick up another doubleheader next week, but otherwise their next games will be played in Florida.

Clarkson scored in all but one of its at bats over the course of two games on Tuesday, producing 25 runs in eight at bats. The first game opened with Clarkson scoring four runs on just two hits. The bases were loaded with two hit by pitches and a single, allowing Devin Fitzpatrick's walk to force in a run. Bridget Kerwin did the same to put the Knights up 2-0, while a single from Elizabeth Greco drove in the third and another bases loaded walk by Molly Pezzano put the tally at 4-0. Fitzpatrick delivered a sacrifice fly in the second for Clarkson's fifth run, but the game was blown open in the third when the Knights plated six. Kaya Johnson singled to open the inning and came all the way around when Isabel Haspil singled to center. Katy Aldous doubled in two and Elizabeth Greco singled home two more runs to make it 10-0 and Kaya Johnson's RBI single scored another as the Knights batted around.

On the other end, Devin Fitzpatrick was virtually untouchable, keeping the ball from ever leaving the infield as she struck out seven and got seven more outs on weak grounders. Only one ball was hit in the air and it was a pop up in foul territory to Bridget Kerwin at first base.

In game two, once again Sabourin led off the game by getting hit by a pitch and then stole second. Katy Aldous followed with a triple to quickly plate the first run of the game, and then came around on an RBI ground out by Zoey Kovach. Devin Fitzpatrick reignited the rally with a double off the wall and scored on a fielder's choice after Bridget Kerwin had singled to put runners on the corner. In the second, Clarkson plated four, seemingly out of nowhere as only Isabel Haspil reached among the first three hitters of the inning. Aldous and Kovach each singled in the infield to load the bases and Fitzpatrick unloaded them with a shot to left field.

The third saw three more runs come across as Aldous singled home a pair and Kovach singled in another. In the fourth, Clarkson produced four more runs with Kaya Johnson singling in one, Emma Sabourin's hit driving in two, and then a double steal allowing Sabourin to score. Canton got on the board with two runs in the top of the fifth, but it was far too little to extend the game.

Lily Corrice picked up the win for the Knights in the nightcap, striking out eight over four innings and giving up just one hit and three walks.

Katy Aldous finished 6-for-6 on the day with a double, triple, five runs scored and five more driven in. Kaya Johnson went 4-for-6 with three runs and two RBI, Elizabeth Greco was 3-for-5 with four RBI, and Devin Fitzpatrick had six RBI and scored three runs in seven plate appearances (2-for-4, two walks, sac fly).
