Potsdam, NY – A dominant first quarter gave the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team an early foothold on the road against Nazareth University, and the Golden Knights completed the non-league portion of the 2024 schedule with a 14-9 victory on Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 7-1 on the season while Nazareth fell to 3-6 on the year. Clarkson continues Liberty League play this Saturday when the team serves as host to University of Rochester.

Senior Madelynn Barnum scored three of Clarkson's first four goals in the opening eight minutes and then assisted on the last goal of the quarter to put the Golden Knights up by a score of 5-0 just 15 minutes into the contest. Clarkson enjoyed a 13-3 edge in shots in the first period, and it was even more decisive in terms of shots on goal, where the Knights led 11-1.

The game evened out in the second quarter as each team scored three times, but the Knights maintained their five-goal advantage at the half. Near the start of the third, Clarkson pushed its margin to seven goals, but the Knights could never keep the clock rolling with a double-digit advantage, instead keeping pace with the Golden Flyers. Nazareth scored while up a player at the end of the third, and then scored four in the first six-plus minutes of the fourth quarter to put a bit of a scare into the Knights. Shortly after the fourth goal in the quarter for Naz, Julia Lavarnway and Barnum scored less than 30 seconds apart to return the lead to five, where it stayed for the remainder of the game.

Barnum finished with five points on four goals and one assist while Makenna Cassin chipped in four points on three goals and an assist. Brooklynne Perrigo found the back of the net for three goals and Lavarnway produced three points (2-1-3) while Gabby Cranfield notched two (1-1-2). Rylee Ganter had four groundballs and two caused turnovers, Meredith James scooped up three groundballs with one caused turnover, and Ireland Morgia led the team with eight draw controls.

For Nazareth, Julia Dietz posted four points (2-2-4) and both Sophia Scialdone and Kate Metzler had three (2-1-3). Makenna Misiurewicz recorded four draws.

Clarkson finished with a 35-22 lead in shots (27-14 shots on goal) and also won 17 of the 26 draws. Jennaca McGill made three saves in 51 minutes and Riley Donovan had two saves over the final nine minutes for the Knights, while Allie Lestinec stopped 13 shots and added five groundballs.
