Petrie Nets Game-Winner In Quadruple Overtime to Send Clarkson to Frozen Four

Potsdam, NY – In one of the longest NCAA Women's Hockey games ever, the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team outlasted the University of Minnesota on a goal in the fourth overtime period from Dominique Petrie, sending the Knights to the Frozen Four after a 3-2 victory on Saturday evening at Cheel Arena.

In front of a nearly capacity crowd despite the school being on spring break, the fourth-ranked Golden Knights advanced to their sixth Frozen Four and first since 2019 with the quadruple overtime win, pushing their record to 33-4-2. Fifth-seeded Minnesota saw its season end with a mark of 27-10-2. Clarkson will take on top-seeded Ohio State next Friday in Durham, NH, where they will be joined by Wisconsin and Colgate in the other semifinal matchup.

After six full exhausting periods, the Golden Knights finally were able to cash in on the power play early on in the fourth overtime. Audrey Wethington was whistled for a hard hit near the boards about 20 feet from the Clarkson bench, giving the Golden Knights their fourth power play chance of the game. About 30 seconds into the penalty, Clarkson reset its offense from behind the net, sending the puck out to the left point for Nicole Gosling. She then passed it over to the top of the right circle for Haley Winn, but Winn was quick to give it back to Gosling at the high slot. Gosling then wristed a shot off of Minnesota goaltender Lucy Morgan, but the rebound fell at the feet of Petrie at the top of the crease where it was knocked in at 5:44 of the fourth extra session, or 125 minutes, 44 seconds after the opening faceoff.

The overtime goal marked the beginning of a long road back for the Golden Knights as the visiting Golden Gophers put Clarkson on its heels in the first period. Despite limited chances for both teams in the first handful of minutes, Minnesota picked up a score at 7:26. Madeline Wethington took a shot from the high slot which was redirected by Josefin Bouveng. Her shot was denied, but as she was falling down Bouveng took another swipe at the puck, knocking it in to make the score 1-0. Barely a minute later, Minnesota scored again as Bouveng tossed a pass from the left circle through traffic, just beyond the pads of Clarkson goaltender Michelle Pasiechnyk. On the opposite side of the crease, Ella Huber was there to backhand the puck in at 8:47.

Clarkson was able to cut the margin to one before the end of the period, however, as Minnesota was whistled for an interference penalty. Halfway through the infraction, the Knights cashed in when Haley Winn wristed a shot on the Minnesota goal. The puck ticked off Taylor Stewart's stick, was then kicked away by the pad of Lucy Morgan, and then knocked in off the skate or leg of Wethington to make it 2-1.

In the second period, it appeared as if Minnesota was going to pick up a key goal to put the team back up by two. While on the power play, Abbey Murphy took a shot from the top of the left circle where Ella Huber was able to knock it in. After review, however, the goal was called off for goaltender interference, giving the Knights second life.

The third period saw Minnesota try to burn clock, especially in the final 10 minutes. The Golden Gophers seemed content to kill time by holding the puck against the boards, while remaining opportunistic when chances came there way. With just over three minutes to go, Nicole Gosling and Jenna Goodwin had shots denied on a solid rush from the Knights, but the attempt was denied, forcing Clarkson to pull Pasiechnyk for an extra attacker.

The tactic worked roughly 20 seconds into Clarkson's time with an empty net. Haley Winn sent a pass from the slot to Alexie Guay at the top of the left circle, where she passed the puck to the bottom of that circle. From there, Dominique Petrie took a shot with a tough angle, but found space between Morgan and the post to tie the game 2-2 with 1:51 remaining. Only 30 seconds later, Minnesota was called for a penalty, but the Knights did not get any grade-A chances during that stretch, sending the game to overtime.

Clarkson came out strong in the overtime while still on the power play, but the best chance actually came when the penalty ended as Dominique Petrie's shot just missed before the Golden Gophers could get a fifth skater in the zone. After about five minutes of skating backwards in its own defensive zone, Minnesota got things going on offensively near the midway point of the period. Ava Lindsay had a hard shot from the top of the left circle that was denied by Pasiechnyk and then Madeline Wethington followed with a slap shot from the right circle which was gloved by Clarkson's netminder. A slashing call gave Minnesota a power-play chance, but the Golden Gophers got nothing out of it, allowing the game to head to a second overtime. The biggest save of the next two overtimes came late in the third overtime when Pasiechnyk made a kick save on a shot from Bouveng with 3:30 remaining.

The two teams combined for 120 shots on goal, with Minnesota edging the Knights 64-56. Clarkson dominated on faceoffs, winning 89 times to Minnesota's 46, and the Knights went 2-for-4 on the power play while the Golden Gophers were held scoreless in four opportunities. Pasiechnyk made a career-high 61 saves, while Morgan stopped 53 shots.
