Knights Fall in Defensive Battle Versus Union, 45-40

Schenectady, NY – An 11-0 run early in the fourth quarter turned a six-point deficit into a five-point lead as the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team found itself on the wrong end of a come-from-behind victory for Union College, 45-40, in Liberty League action Friday evening.

The Golden Knights saw their mark fall to 4-18 overall and 2-13 in conference games, while Union moved to 8-14 and 7-8. Clarkson takes on Ithaca College on Saturday afternoon.

After mustering just 25 points in the first three quarters, Union turned things around in the fourth period by scoring 20 points, including its only two 3-point field goals of the game.

Clarkson found itself in an early hole, but a Raelin Burns 3-pointer and an Elizabeth Aiossa layup allowed the Knights to take a lead in the first quarter. Clarkson would go scoreless for a stretch of seven-and-a-half minutes from the end of the first to the start of the second, but Union only made free throws at the beginning of the second period and led by just seven. Clarkson scored nine straight, capped by a jumper-and-one from Cassidy Dumont to put the Knights back on top at the half.

At the start of the third quarter, Union regained the lead briefly, only to see the Knights go to the interior with four layups in three minutes, pushing Clarkson's advantage to six. When Elizabeth Aiossa made a layup to begin the fourth quarter, that was where the margin stood once again, but the Knights would go four-plus minutes without a point. Union took advantage with its 11-0 run. Grace Arcoleo hit a 3-pointer, Union's first of the game, early in the fourth quarter, and then Jelena Perovic scored three straight baskets for the Garnet Chargers. A make from Cassidy Dumont ended the run, but Arcoleo made another clutch 3-pointer for the home team. Although a six-point margin in such a low-scoring game could seem like too much to overcome late in the game, the Knights wouldn't concede so easily. Emma Chambers hit a 3-pointer from the corner to help the Knights draw within three, and Clarkson remained close thanks to makes from Addie Kea and Raelin Burns. Two free throws in the final 20 seconds saw the margin increase to five, and a late turnover kept Clarkson from cutting into the deficit.

Cassidy Dumont led Clarkson with 11 points while Bella Doyle added in nine points, eight rebounds, and four blocked shots. Clarkson was 3-for-10 from the 3-point line, only the second time all season that the Knights shot fewer than 15 3-pointers in a game.

For Union, Jelena Perovic scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Arcoleo scored seven points, all in the fourth for the Garnet Chargers.
