Clarkson Defense Clamps Down to Allow Fewest Points to SLU in Eight Decades

Canton, NY – Matthew Parent came off the bench to net 12 points in just 15 minutes overall, helping to spark an early first-half run for the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team as the Golden Knights posted a 59-37 victory against St. Lawrence University Saturday afternoon at Burkman Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights evened their season record at 2-2 and moved to 1-0 in the Liberty League, while the Saints fell to 1-1 and 0-1 in conference games. Clarkson is on the road against Wednesday, facing off against Vermont State University Lyndon.

The last time Clarkson held the Saints to fewer than 40 points in a game, the United States was still basking in the victory of World War II, as it occurred during the 1945-46 season in a 45-28 win.

In strong foreshadowing for the low scoring game to come, both teams went nearly three minutes without a point. St. Lawrence led by a few early on, including a 13-11 advantage with 9:53 remaining. It was at that point that Parent began making shots, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers to tie the game with a little over six minutes remaining. Aydin Kocak then made a couple of layups to give Clarkson the lead, something that it would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest. Jack Dalgety hit a 3-pointer with 2:26 to go, and Steve DeRegis nailed another with 1:23 left to give the Knights a 10-point lead at the break, as Clarkson ended the half on a 16-4 run.

At the start of the second half, the Saints remained within striking distance, although the lead stayed in double figures and squeaked into the teens for the Knights in the first eight minutes. Up by 10 near the midway point of the half, Clarkson got 3-pointers from Dalgety and Parent to push the margin to 16 (47-31) with a little under nine minutes to go. St. Lawrence had no answer, turning the ball over and missing shots in its next few possessions while Clarkson expanded the lead to 21. St. Lawrence would briefly trim the gap to as few as 15, but never challenged the Knights the rest of the way.

Parent and Jack Dalgety tied for the Clarkson team lead with 12 points each, with Parent shooting 4-for-8 from beyond the arc and Dalgety contributing an additional six rebounds. Finn Cork posted 11 rebounds and four assists, Lorenzo Rappa had six assists, and Braeden Burns notched eight boards to go along with his six points.

For St. Lawrence, Adam Dudzinski recorded 11 points and six rebounds, but shot just 2-for-11 from the floor. Dan Anderson also had seven points, five rebounds, and three steals for the Saints. St. Lawrence shot just 3-for-20 from beyond the 3-point arc in the game.
