Knights Blanked on Road Against Quinnipiac

Hamden, CT – Julia Minotti made 30 saves between the posts and allowed just one goal to slip by her while she was in the net for the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team, but two late empty-net goals allowed Quinnipiac to pull away for a 3-0 victory in the ECAC Hockey opener at M&T Bank Arena.

The Knights suffered their third straight defeat in New England and fell to 6-3-0 on the season while the Bobcats edged up to 7-3-1. Clarkson looks to get back on track on Saturday when the team faces Princeton University.

Both goaltenders played well in the opening period, denying all attempts between the pipes, but it wasn't just the last line that stood out. Quinnipiac was on the power play early on, but Clarkson allowed just a single shot while down a skater and that attempt was blocked before it could get close to the goaltender. At the other end, the Bobcats also squashed the first minute of a power play and then kept the Knights scoreless at the start of the second on the same penalty kill.

Each offense had a few solid chances in the second, but only the Bobcats could break through in the middle stanza. Taylor Brueske kept the puck in the zone and dumped it down low where it appeared as if Clarkson might be able to gain possession and send the puck at least back out to the right point. However, the Bobcats kept control of the puck behind the net and Sophie Urban flipped the puck out in front of the net, finding the stick of Kathryn Stockdale, who was able to backhand a shot past Julia Minotti at 9:44. Clarkson did finish the period with a 12-9 edge in shots on goal.

Although the stat sheet didn't indicate it at the conclusion of the period, the Golden Knights dominated play in the third, producing a strong forecheck that kept Quinnipiac on its toes for lengthy periods of time and actually forced the Bobcats to take a timeout with well over six minutes remaining in the frame to allow the defense to gain a breather. Unfortunately, the Knights were unable to get an equalizer during that strong rush which necessitated them to pull their goaltender. That would make the score more lopsided than what it truly was, as Quinnipiac scored two empty net goals, one with just over two minutes remaining and another in the final 40 seconds.

Quinnipiac finished with a 33-30 edge in shots on goal and both teams were scoreless on the power play. Minotti made 30 saves for Clarkson and Kaley Doyle matched that with 30 saves of her own for the Bobcats.
