Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Knights Drop Liberty League Contest to Ithaca

Potsdam, N.Y.- A second-half score proved to be the decider as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team dropped a 1-0 contest, Saturday afternoon.

The Knights drop to 3-6-2 overall, 0-3-1 in the Liberty League.

Early on the Golden Knights scored what looked to be the breakthrough in the 9th minute as Paige Ford directed a loose ball into the net from inside the six yard line off a header from Callie Abel. However, the offside flag from the assistant referee went up, canceling the early score, keeping the game notched at 0-0.

Ithaca controlled the better chances in the opening 45, testing Molly DiCaprio in net, forcing the senior into two saves over the remainder of the half.

Into the start of the second half, both teams settled in, as play was dominated in the midfield. In the 60th minute the visitors would find the breakthrough, capitalizing on a corner set piece. A ball in from the right side was headed into the danger-zone by a Bomber forward before being deflected several times in front of the net. The ball would eventually fall in front of Ally Stanton for Ithaca, who jumped on the failed clearance, slotting the ball past DiCaprio for the game's opening goal.

Ithaca would come close to doubling their advantage on another corner kick in the 64th minute. Julia Cascone whipped a right-footed ball towards the goal from the left side, nearly pulling off an Olimpico goal, as the ball struck the top of the crossbar and bounced out of play.

Clarkson eventually found some footing as the second half progressed creating two chances just a little over three minutes apart. A shot from Emma Robinson from the left side of the penalty area bounced dangerously towards goal, until it was cleared off the line by a Bomber defender. Emily Davis supplied the latter chance, connecting on a shot from about 25 yards out which went just high of the crossbar and out of danger.

The best chance of the game fell to the Knights as an Ithaca defender was whistled for a handball inside the edge of the box in the 87th minute. With a chance to tie the game and earn a point for the Knights, Maddie Lopol stepped up to the penalty spot for the shot. Her attempt would fly just wide of the right post and over the end line, as the Bombers held on to the slight advantage.

DiCaprio made four saves in net for the Green and Gold while Grace Hickey was untested through the 90 minutes of action.
Ithaca held the advantage in shots, 8-5, and shots on goal, 5-1.
