Dereka and Jasey Connect in Clarkson's 2-0 Win Over SUNY Canton

Potsdam, NY – Newcomers Jonathan Dereka and Dylan Jasey each scored second-half goals for the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team as the Golden Knights posted their third straight shutout with a 2-0 non-league victory over SUNY Canton on Wednesday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 3-1 on the season while the Kangaroos dropped to 1-3 in 2023. Clarkson will have the weekend off from games and will return to the road with a game at Russell Sage next Tuesday.

On a couple of occasions in the first half, the Knights challenged SUNY Canton goalkeeper Owen Kwong with multiple shots, but the senior was able to make denials with his hands and diving stops. At the other end, Josh Morelli was called upon twice to make saves, but both were from far enough distances as to not truly threaten the Clarkson defense.

Clarkson came out with renewed energy in the second half, and quickly capitalized with a goal. The ball was played to the top of the penalty area, and Nolan Grady was able to elude the defense before tapping a ball over to Jack Donnelly at the right of the area. Donnelly tried to return the pass to Grady filling the middle, but the ball skipped over his foot. Fortunately, Jonathan Dereka was there and finished off the play near the six to give Clarkson a 1-0 lead at 52: 25.

Roughly eight minutes later, the Knights found the back of the net again with a key insurance goal. A cross was bounced around in the box and looked like it might be cleared, but Clarkson regained possession around 20 yards from the end line. A tapped pass found the foot of Dylan Jasey, and the transfer did the rest, maneuvering around the defense and finding space with a hard right shot from about 12 yards away at the 60:47 mark.

Clarkson continued to challenge the Canton defense, posting seven shots on goal in the second half. Canton did have a solid chance in the second half as well, with Brennan Harmer's shot alone from about 15 yards out just getting tipped away by Clarkson keeper Josh Morelli.

Clarkson finished with a 21-7 lead in total shots, and an 11-3 edge in shots on goal. Clarkson also had a 5-3 advantage in corner kick chances. Morelli made three saves for his second shutout of the year, while Kwong made nine stops for the Roos.
