Everest Scores First Collegiate Goal, DiCaprio Denies Four Shots in Clarkson's Opening Win Against DeSales

Potsdam, NY – Midway through the first half, Brooke Everest gained possession in the box and lofted a shot to the far post, accounting for the lone goal of Friday's contest, as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team downed DeSales University 1-0 in the season-opener of the 2023 campaign.

The Golden Knights and St. Lawrence will swap opponents for Saturday, as Clarkson will take on Nazareth University and the Saints will host DeSales.

Clarkson controlled the play early on, keeping pressure on the Bulldogs and holding the visitors without a shot for the first 30 minutes. Despite that advantage in the DeSales' defensive end, it took a bit of a fluke for Clarkson to score its opening goal. DeSales had a throw-in near midfield, but the Knights intercepted it and once the Bulldogs defense tried to clear the ball out of bounds, Maddie Lopol stepped in front of the attempt and sent a long pass down field. Another DeSales defender got a head on the ball, but was unable to clear it, and yet another Bulldogs' player stepped on the ball in the far left box to hold the play in place. Brooke Everest was providing constant pressure on both players and quickly turned for a shot, sending a high shot with her right foot to the opposite post at the 26:40 mark, her first collegiate goal.

Each team had chances in the second half, with Emma Ribeiro challenging the Clarkson defense in the 55th minute, but Molly DiCaprio sprawled out to catch the high shot and keep DeSales off the board. A little later, a direct kick from outside the box was again corralled by DiCaprio.

Though Clarkson had other opportunities squashed off corners and with missed chances in the box, the closest miss came off Julia Tylar's direct kick in the final five minutes. The sophomore's shot sailed just high of the crossbar, with the Knights settling for the 1-0 win.

Clarkson finished with a 13-6 edge in shots and a 5-0 lead in corner kick chances. DiCaprio made four saves for her first shutout of the season and the 10th of her career, making her the sixth Clarkson goalkeeper to reach double digits in Clarkson program history. Jozlyn Minnema stopped three shots for DeSales.
