Knights Clinch Playoff Spot with Sweep of Skidmore, 1-0 and 4-2

Potsdam, NY – Two standout pitching performances from Riley Page and Devin Fitzpatrick of the Clarkson University Softball team propelled the Golden Knights into the postseason as the Golden Knights swept Skidmore College on Saturday 1-0 and 4-2 at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 20-16 on the season and 6-8 in the Liberty League, clinching a spot for the play-in game for the double elimination tournament. Skidmore fell to 3-9 in conference games and 10-21 overall, still having University of Rochester on the schedule for tomorrow. At 6-8 in conference, Clarkson currently resides in fourth place and can either be the home team in the play-in game against St. Lawrence or the away team versus Union. The Saints and Dutchwomen have a makeup date for one game on Sunday, and the winner will gain the final spot in the Liberty League postseason.

The first game was a pitchers' duel from the start, though both teams had their chances to break through in the early going. Melissa Mathias reached second in the top of the first but was stranded, the same result that Bridget Twaits suffered in the bottom half of the inning. In the second, Skidmore had runners on first and second with one out but couldn't cash in, and the Knights had runners on second and third after a one-out passed ball but also came up empty. Twaits again made it to second in the third, this time with no outs, only to stay on the bases.

In the fourth, Clarkson finally picked up a run, which proved to be the game-winner. Elizabeth Greco opened with a walk and moved to second a ground out. After a single to right from Riley Page put runners on the corners, a wild pitch allowed Greco to race home for a 1-0 Clarkson lead. Skidmore went down in order in both the fifth and sixth innings, and a two-out hit by Chloe McGonagle in the seventh went for naught, as Riley Page struck out the last hitter of the game.

Page was dominant from the start, striking out 10 against just three hits, one walk, and one hit batter over seven innings, picking up her 12th win of the year and third shutout of 2023. The tough-luck loser was Lindsey Raimondi, who allowed just a single earned run over six innings, striking out four along the way.

Game two saw both teams challenge early again, but neither could score until the third. In the top of the first, Skidmore had runners on the corners but finished the frame with no runs, and in the bottom of the second, Devin Fitzpatrick just missed out on a two-run homer, but settled for a long single when her ball to right-center hit the piping on the top of the fence and fell back into play.

Skidmore did pick up two in the top of the third as Elle Harrison and Meghan Robertson each reached on bunt singles, Mathias then lined a ball back up the middle for a two-run single. Although the Knights would not respond in the third, Clarkson did tag Robertson, the game-two starting pitcher, for three runs in the fourth. Zoey Kovach and Elizabeth Greco opened with singles and moved up to second and third after a wild pitch. Riley Page's single through the left side scored one, and Katy Aldous delivered a two-run single to center to tie the game and put the Knights up 3-2. Clarkson added a run in the bottom of the sixth when Bridget Twaits's sacrifice fly scored pinch-runner Elissa Uveino. In the seventh, consecutive hits from Harrison and Robertson put pressure on the Clarkson defense, but Fitzpatrick picked up a strikeout, a ground out, and a fly out to escape the inning unscathed.

Fitzpatrick earned her eighth win of the season, allowing eight hits and striking out seven over seven innings of work. Greco was 3-for-3 in game two, and Aldous had a pair of RBI with her 2-for-3 performance.
