Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Knights Fall In Overtime to SLU in Liberty League First Round Game

Potsdam, NY - Both teams had chances in overtime, but it was Ben Hutchinson of St. Lawrence who would finally end the game as the Saints outlasted the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team 10-9 in the opening round of the Liberty League playoffs Tuesday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The fourth-seeded Golden Knights fell to 11-5 on the season and will have to await the NCAA selection committee's decision to see if they will make the tournament starting next week. St. Lawrence improved to 12-5 overall and advances to face top-seeded RIT on Friday.

It took some time for either team to gain much of a foothold in the game, as each squad always had an answer for the other in the first two quarters of the game. The Knights did have the advantage in the second quarter, as the team turned a 3-2 deficit after the opening period into a 5-4 lead at the half. The Knights used a pair of man-up goals to take the lead (4-3) and later on a Matt Reilly score had Clarkson up by one at the midway point.

Andrew Kearney scored an unassisted goal after a flag was thrown to give Clarkson a 6-4 lead, but the Saints scored while down a man 32 seconds later to begin a 4-0 run in the third period. The Saints led by two through 45 minutes, only to see the Knights rally in the fourth quarter. Bryen Penney drew the team within one with a goal at 13:16 and Sebastian Geiger found Penney again at 3:59 to keep the margin at one. It wasn't until Tyler Hall scored in tight with 1:56 remaining that the game was knotted up at 9-9.

In the final 90 seconds, each team had a chance to score, though St. Lawrence's attempt was high before a turnover. After the clear, Clarkson let most of the time tick away for one last chance and Matt Reilly's low shot was denied by Saints' goalkeeper Michael Marinello. In the extra session, Geiger had a shot go wide a triple-team forced a Clarkson turnover. Jacob Mattice stopped a Stew Hutchinson shot on the ground, but the Saints regained possession. After a couple of shots were off the cage, Ben Hutchinson got in close with a couple of dodges and was able to score with 29 seconds left to end the game.

Clarkson took 54 shots to St. Lawrence's 39, but the two teams were closer in shots on goal (26-23). The Saints won the battle of groundballs, 25-21. Both goalies played well, with Clarkson's Jacob Mattice making 13 saves and Michael Marinello stopping 17 shots for St. Lawrence.

Grad student Bryan Penney scored three goals and Matt Reilly had two goals and an assist to lead the Clarkson offense. Thomas Fiebich also added a goal and an assist while Andrew Kearney, Christian Canino, and Tyler Hall each scored a goal. Matt Szwagulinski caused two turnovers and had three groundballs.

For St. Lawrence, Ben Hutchinson had four points on three goals and an assist and Judge Murphy scored twice with one assist. Cody Sipher also had a goal and an assist. Paddy Condon won 14 of 23 faceoffs with 11 groundballs.
