Knights Hang With Rochester, but Yellowjackets Pull Away Late 8-4 and 9-0

Potsdam, NY – Rochester broke a pair of tight games open in the later frames as the Yellowjackets swept the Clarkson University Softball team in a Liberty League doubleheader Friday afternoon, 8-4 and 9-0, at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 14-12 overall and 2-4 in Liberty League games while Rochester moved to 23-5 and 6-0 in conference contests. Clarkson will celebrate its two seniors on Saturday when the team hosts RIT.

In the opener, it was Clarkson that would score first, tallying twice in its first at bat. Molly Pezzano, Emma Sabourin, and Zoey Kovach each singled to load the bases with one out, and Riley Page followed with a single to right to plate a pair, giving the Knights a 2-0 advantage. Rochester picked up runs in the bottom of the third, all coming with two outs. Ally Kim, Bailey Nicholoff, and Jenna Gorecki each doubled to tie the game, and Hannah Keiper singled to score the go-ahead run. Madi Turner then followed with another double to put Rochester up 4-2.

In the bottom half of the third, the Knights would get a run back on a single from Bridget Kerwin, scoring Zoey Kovach, pulling the Knights within one at 4-3. However, A two-run homer from Gorecki in the fifth and a solo homer from Molly Mason in the sixth put the Yellowjackets up by four, and another run came around on an error in the sixth for an 8-3 gap. Clarkson would pick up a run in the bottom half of the frame on back-to-back doubles from Kaya Johnson and Katy Aldous, but a quiet seventh ended the game.

Sabourin was 3-for-4 in game one, and Kovach also picked up two hits. Riley Page took the loss for the Knights, giving up 10 hits with no walks and striking out three in 5.1 innings of work. For Rochester, Molly Broccolo was touched for four runs in 5.1 innings, but struck out four and worked her way out of trouble to earn her 13th win of the season.

Despite the lopsided score of game two, the majority of the second contest was close. Rochester had runs in the fourth and fifth, as Madi Turner scored on a Jensen Sminchak single in the fourth and then Turner drove in a run in the fifth, but the game was just a 2-0 contest until the seventh. Gorecki singled in a run, Keiper singled in a run, and Turner singled home another score to put the tally at 5-0. Rochester continued to push runs across with an error, a fielder's choice, and a ground out, and eventually an Ally Kim double plated the seventh run of the inning and ninth of the game.

Devin Fitzpatrick took the loss in game two for the Knights, giving up nine runs, though only three were earned, in seven innings. Emily Sharlach picked up the win, inducing 13 fly outs and four ground outs as well as striking out four and giving up three hits.
