Fourth Quarter Rally Sends Knights to 15-12 Defeat at SLU

Canton, NY – A big fourth quarter saw the home team score eight goals, as the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team finished on the short end of a 15-12 decision against St. Lawrence University in Liberty League action Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights dipped below .500 at 7-8 overall and 2-6 in conference games, while St. Lawrence improved to 7-5 and 5-2. Clarkson hits the road for a contest against Bard College on Saturday afternoon.

The two teams battled back and forth in the first quarter with the Saints edging the Knights 4-3 in the first 15 minutes. Clarkson had the advantage for much of the second period, scoring four straight goals in the first five minutes of the quarter. Julia Lavarnway scored twice in that stretch and Hailey Millington also tallied twice, including a score with the Knights down a player. St. Lawrence rallied with two goals in the second portion of the period, but Chrissy Benedict scored a player-up goal with 21 seconds left, giving Clarkson an 8-6 lead at the half.

Although the Saints pulled to within one early in the third, Clarkson picked up three more goals, including a late score by Madelynn Barnum, putting the Knights up 11-7. However, St. Lawrence scored on eight of its nine shots in the fourth. The Saints took advantage of two yellow cards by the Knights midway through the fourth, and scored the go-ahead goal on the player-up at 5:09 with Neve Ley gave the Saints their first lead since late in the opening quarter. Three more goals put the Saints up by four, though a late goal by Hailey Millington provided the final tally (15-12).

Jennaca McGill made eight saves for the Knights and Raelynn Bovenzi denied six shots for St. Lawrence. The Saints finished with a 31-21 edge in shots (23-18 shots on goal) and a 13-12 lead in groundballs, while Clarkson had a 16-15 edge in draws.

Hailey Millington scored three goals while Julia Lavarnway, Mia Petrone, and Madelynn Barnum each had three points on two goals and an assist for Clarkson. Sydney Nakas also struck for two early goals and Lauren Shanahan had four draw controls and caused two turnovers.

For St. Lawrence, Neve Ley had a game-high six points thanks to five goals and an assist. Jacqui Cloutier scored four times and also contributed four groundballs, four draws, and two caused turnovers. Charlotte Powell also had three points.
