Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Knights Upend Nationally-Ranked Union, 9-8

Potsdam, NY – The last shot that could have potentially sent the game to overtime was broken up before it ever went on cage, helping the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team upend top-10 ranked Union College, 9-8, Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 9-1 overall and 1-1 in the Liberty League, while Union fell to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in conference games. Clarkson hits the road next weekend to take on Rensselaer in another key conference contest.

As expected with two defenses that rank in the top 20 in the country, goals were at a premium in the first half. Bryan Penney got the Knights on the board six minutes into the game, but neither team was able to find the back of the net until Emmett Lyne and Jake Mabardy connected for Union in the final minute of the opening quarter. Clarkson built a small lead in the second quarter as Tyler Hall, Bryan Penney, and Matt Reilly each scored unassisted goals, but that work was undone by the Dutchmen late in the half. Lyne scored again with just 69 seconds remaining, and Zach Davis tallied with 21 seconds to go to put the score 4-3 at the half.

Union kept the momentum on its side in the early going of the second half, tying the game at 11:58 and then taking its first lead of the game on a man-up goal from Justin Greene at 4:32. Clarkson did not shrink from the challenge, however, as Thomas Fiebich connected with Andrew Kearney at 3:08, and then the roles were reversed on a man-up goal at 1:41 to put Clarkson back on top.

In the fourth quarter, another man-up goal by Sebastian Geiger gave Clarkson a 7-5 advantage, but in the next four minutes, Union scored twice to tie the game at 7-7. With under five minutes to go, possessions became even more important, and Matt Reilly made sure one counted when he bounced in a shot from up top with 3:35 remaining to put Clarkson back up one. A minute later Bryan Penney converted from the perimeter to make the score 9-7 and it appeared as if the Knights could run out the clock.

Union was far from finished, though, as the Dutchmen forced a turnover in the final minute and raced down the field to get within one on a Zach Davis goal with only 33 seconds left on the clock. The Dutchmen won the next faceoff and called a timeout with 12 seconds remaining to set up a last play. With the time ticking down, a pass from the left side to the middle about 10 yards from the net was knocked away and in the scrum to pick up the loose ball, the horn sounded to end the game.

Clarkson finished with a 41-26 edge in shots, though the margin was much closer in terms of shots on goal (23-19). Union won the battle of faceoffs (13-7) and also had more groundballs (26-22).

Both goalkeepers were outstanding, as Clarkson's Jacob Mattice stopped 11 shots and Union's Dan Donahue had 14 saves. Adding to the defense for the Knights was Patrick Sanna, who caused four turnovers, and Matt Szwagulinski, who forced two turnovers. Union's Gray Humphrey also was solid defensively, causing three turnovers and snagging two groundballs.

Bryan Penney scored three goals to lead the Knights and Thomas Fiebich added three points on a goal and two assists. Matt Reilly scored twice, and both Andrew Kearney and Tyler Hall had a goal and an assist.

For Union, Emmett Lyne had a game-high five points on three goals and two assists. Zach Davis scored three goals, and Peter Kip had a goal and two assists. Matthew Paolatto won 12 of 17 faceoffs and had eight groundballs for the Dutchmen.
