MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Making their 2nd straight NCAA appearance the Golden Knights looked to get past a team they have yet to face in the NCAA Tourney, but in the end, the Bulldogs of UMD kept their hopes alive of playing in the Frozen Four they will be hosting next weekend.
The teams traded chances in the opening minutes and then a shift in which UMD was able to get control of the puck below the goal line and a centering feed to Taylor Stewart found its way into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead for UMD at 14:01.
The Knights ran into penalty trouble in the first period after giving up the goal when
Sena Catterall was a 2-minute boarding penalty. After a review, the call was changed to a 5-minute major for boarding. It was not assessed as a game misconduct, so Catterall remained in the game. The Knights started the 2nd period killing off the major, and with under a minute left in the penalty to Catterall,
Brooke McQuigge was called for Boarding. The Knights killed off both penalties and started to get some momentum going until a call for slashing on
Kirstyn McQuigge put them back on the penalty kill. Another successful kill allowed the Knights to get back to trying to tie the game. Late in the period, the Knights were making a rush through the neutral zone when
Anne Cherkowski was hit at mid-ice, the resulting turnover lead to a hit at the Clarkson blueline in which Cherkowski was called for a hit from behind. She was also given a game misconduct so the Knights once again were faced with a 5-minute penalty kill.
Clarkson had killed off much of the penalty until 1:48 into the period when Duluth seemed to score, but a review indicated the puck was kicked in. Clarkson wasn't in the clear yet, and with just seconds left in the penalty, Taylor Stewart got her 2nd of the game to put the Bulldogs up 2-0.
Clarkson would mount lots of pressure in the 3rd period, pulling their goalie for the extra attacker with 2:30 left in the game. The Knights were unable to score in the closing minutes and Duluth will advance to face host Minnesota on Saturday.
Clarkson will finish the season at 29-11-2. The 2023-24 schedule will be released this summer along with ticket information for season ticket holders.
