Golden Knights' Defense Shines in 15-3 Win Over Plattsburgh

Potsdam, NY – Keeping its opponents off the scoreboard for the first 18 minutes of the game, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team built an early lead and cruised to a 15-3 victory over Plattsburgh State in a non-league contest Wednesday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights remained unbeaten at 4-0 and head to Florida next week to take on Western New England University and Rowan University. Plattsburgh State dropped its first game of the season, falling to 1-2.

The first five minutes saw both teams' defenses hold against limited offense, but Clarkson broke through with a goal as Hailey Millington found Chrissy Benedict for the opening score at 9:10 in the first period. From that point, Clarkson's offense was productive, scoring four goals in the final six minutes of the quarter for a 5-0 lead. Madelynn Barnum and Julia Lavarnway scored at the start of the second to help the Knights build a 7-0 lead, but Plattsburgh was able to end its scoring drought at 11:23 on a goal by Lindsay Guzzetta. Although Guzzetta scored again six minutes later, Clarkson kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard for the next 28-plus minutes, as Plattsburgh could muster only one more goal midway through the fourth quarter.

Julia Lavarnway enjoyed another big game for the Knights, scoring six points on four goals and two assists. The rest of Clarkson's offense was spread out as Hailey Millington and Mia Petrone each had three points, while Lauren Shanahan, Madelynn Barnum, Chrissy Benedict, and Sydney Nakas each scored twice. Petrone also contributed five groundballs and four draw controls, Shanahan had four draws, three groundballs, and caused two turnovers, and Barnum also recorded four draws.

For Plattsburgh, Lindsay Guzzetta scored twice and Emma McLaughlin tallied one goal.

Clarkson held a 46-15 edge in shots (29-10 in shots on goal), a 22-10 lead in groundballs, and a 15-6 advantage on draws. In the crease, Jennaca McGill played the first half and made three saves in 30 minutes for the Knight, while Danni Moran came on to play the second half, making four stops in 30 minutes. Johanna Malone was busy in the Plattsburgh crease, making 14 saves and also leading the team with three groundballs.
