Strong Defensive Effort From Start to Finish in Clarkson's 12-7 Win at Nazareth

Rochester, NY – Grad student Jacob Mattice stopped 14 shots and the rest of the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team's defense made things difficult for Nazareth College, as the Golden Knights picked up a 12-7 win in non-league action Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Knights moved to 2-0 on the season while Nazareth fell to 1-3. Clarkson will play one more game before heading to Florida for a pair of contests during spring break, as the Green and Gold host Oswego State on Tuesday afternoon.

Though Nazareth scored on its first shot in the opening minute of the game, the Golden Knights' defense was stout for the remainder of the first half. Although the Golden Flyers were up a player for two minutes on three Clarkson penalties, Jacob Mattice denied everything tossed at him and the Knights' defense kept Nazareth at a safe distance with numerous shots being taken from the perimeter and failing to find a target. In a stretch of 24 scoreless minutes for Nazareth, the Golden Knights took advantage, with Bryan Penney finding the back of the net three times and both Christian Canino and Connor Matthews scoring once. Nazareth was finally able to cash in on a fourth Clarkson penalty, tallying with 4:54 to go, but Clarkson picked up two goals in the final 90 seconds to head into the break leading 7-3.

Nazareth led in shots in the first 30 minutes, 26-17, but the Knights had more shots on goal (12-11).

At the start of the third quarter, Penney scored early and Andrew Kearney notched a goal from the left side to put the Knights up 9-3. Nazareth scored two goals late in the period to get back within four, but Matt Reilly made sure that the Golden Flyers mini-run would not change the momentum, as he scored late in the period to make it 11-6. Both teams scored one more goal in the fourth period, as Clarkson's defense continued to shine, forcing turnovers and making sure that Nazareth offensive possessions were short.

Bryan Penney led Clarkson in scoring with four goals, while Christian Canino added three points on two goals and an assist, Andrew Kearney had three points on a goal and two assists, and Matt Reilly recorded three points with a goal and two assists. Connor Matthews also scored twice in the game for the Knights. Thanks to a strong effort on faceoffs, Matthew Hansen had eight groundballs and Logan Wilkinson recorded five groundballs. Matt Szwagulinski also caused three turnovers and Mason Volley forced two turnovers.

For Nazareth, Quinn McKercher and Jack McOsker each scored twice, with McOsker also producing five groundballs. Eric Almquist had four groundballs and made 15 saves for the Golden Flyers.

The Golden Flyers ended the game with a 42-38 edge in shots, but Clarkson won all of the other peripheral categories in the game. The Knights went 16-for-21 on faceoffs, had 43 groundballs to Nazareth's 37, and took more shots on target, 27-21.
