Knights Surpass School Mark For Goals in A Game in 25-6 Win Over SUNY Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – Lauren Shanahan scored eight points on six goals and two assists, with four of those goals coming in the first four minutes of the game, as the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team posted its second win in as many days against a SUNYAC foe, downing crosstown rival SUNY Potsdam 25-6 in non-league action at Hantz Field.

Clarkson's 25 goals in the game were a school record for the team's 42-year history, topping the 24 scored against Plattsburgh State in April 2019. The Golden Knights will get a day off before playing another team from the SUNYAC this weekend, taking on nationally-ranked SUNY Geneseo for a good test early in the 2023 campaign. SUNY Potsdam fell to 0-1 on the season after having its season-opener postponed.

Freshman midfielder Lauren Shanahan was a force early on, winning draws and scoring quickly against the Bears, tallying three unassisted goals in the first two minutes of the game. Madelynn Barnum assisted on Shanahan's fourth goal of the game at 11:36 as Clarkson put considerable pressure on the Bears in the opening quarter. The Knights outshot Potsdam 19-2 in the first 15 minutes of the game, and had forced running time just 11 minutes into the game with a double-digit lead.

Clarkson did suffer through a bit of a scoring drought at the start of the second quarter, as Potsdam got on the board at 13:45 and then scored the next two goals as well to pull back to within single digits. That run would be brief, however, as a Chrissy Benedict score at the 5:50 mark had the clock continually rolling again. By the end of the half, the Knights led 15-3.

Lauren Meyers accounted for three of Clarkson's seven goals in the third quarter, as the Knights put the game out of reach, holding a 19-goal advantage after Riley Kuczma on a free-position shot in the waning moments of the period. From there, the two teams essentially traded goals over the final 15 minutes.

Shanahan had a game-high eight points with six goals and two helpers, while Meyers finished with five points on four goals and an assist. Julia Lavarnway scored four points, assisting on three goals and scoring another, and Chrissy Benedict and Mia Petrone each tallied four points with three goals and an assist. Sydney Nakas also recorded four points on two goals and two assists, and Hailey Millington added in three goals. Madelynn Barnum contributed in the midfield with five draw controls, two caused turnovers, and two assists.

For Potsdam, Mia Martin led the team with three points on two goals and an assist and AnnaBelle Mitchell scored twice for the Bears.

Overall, Clarkson held a 39-15 edge in shots, a 28-11 in shots on goal, and a 23-9 advantage on draws. Each team split their goalies, with Clarkson's Jennaca McGill making three saves in 30 minutes and Danni Moran stopping two shots in her 30 minutes. For the Bears, Jane Olszewski stopped one shot in 30 minutes, and Olivia Minarich made two saves in even-numbered quarters.
