CU Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Edgewood and Roger Williams

Winter Haven, FL – With a win in extra innings in the nightcap, the Clarkson University Softball team salvaged a split in its first two games of its Florida trip, as the Golden Knights lost their first game to Edgewood College 3-1 and claimed an eight-inning victory over Roger Williams 9-6 on Saturday afternoon.

Offense was muted in the first game of the day, though both teams were able to scratch a run across in the second inning. Camden Shepherd delivered a sacrifice fly in the top of the second for Edgewood for a 1-0 lead, but the Knights picked up a run in the bottom half of the frame when Riley Page was sent home on a single through the left side by Becky Kennedy-Titsworth. The Knights challenged for runs in the third and fourth, but it was Edgewood that break the tie in the sixth. Two runners reached on an error and a walk, setting the scene for Jenna Sanchez to single in the pair for a 3-1 win for the away team.

The bats broke out in game two for the Golden Knights, as Clarkson scored a season-high nine runs thanks to 17 hits. The Knights put one run on the board in their first at bat, as Emma Sabourin hit a one-out to double and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Riley Page. Roger Williams responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning thanks to a single from J. Wells. Clarkson tied the game in the fourth as Zoey Kovach singled home pinch-runner Elissa Uveino, but it wasn't until the late innings that the game really saw runs come in bunches. Bridget Kerwin led off the top of the fifth with a solo homer to center, Bridget Twaits later singled in Becky Kennedy-Titsworth, and Molly Pezzano scored on a throwing error after moving up to third on a wild pitch. Roger Williams picked up a run in the bottom of the fifth.

In the seventh, Clarkson scored a sixth run on an RBI groundout by Devin Fitzpatrick, but Roger Williams plated three in the bottom half of the inning to send the game to extras. After a runner was placed on second to start the inning, Zoey Kovach singled in Bridget Twaits for the go-ahead run, and two more came in on a Katy Aldous hit.
